From the LA Times:

The Dodgers have sold utility infielder Wilson Valdez to a team in Korea.

Valdez, a 29-year-old Dominican, batted .216 in 41 games with the Dodgers last season but more important was the fact he played five positions without committing an error. Valdez has a career .211 average in a three-year career with four big-league teams.

Valdez played impressively at shortstop this winter with Gigantes de Cibao of the Dominican League, batting leadoff and hitting .287.

I guess I’m not totally sure I see what the point of this is. Look, in the long run, is this really significant? Is not having Wilson Valdez around next year really going to hurt the Dodgers? Nah. Especially not with both Tony Abreu and Chin-Lung Hu around to back up the middle infield (guess this guarantees that at least one of them, probably Abreu, makes the opening day roster).

But, for as insignificant as Valdez really is, he actually proved useful last year. He was a very slick fielder at 2B and SS, and in fact didn’t commit a single error in his time in the Blue. Since I can’t imagine a Korean team really coughed up a huge amount of cash for Valdez, what would have been the harm in letting him play in Vegas in preparation for the inevitable injuries this team always suffers?
