From this morning’s L.A. Times…

Andruw Jones has torn cartilage and a buildup of fluid in his right knee, according to the results of an MRI exam he underwent Monday.

Jones said that if the swelling in his knee doesn’t subside by Friday, he will undergo surgery that will sideline him for four to five weeks.

Now, it’s O.K. to admit it: as our saying here goes, the truth shall set you free.

As you read this, you also breathed this sigh of relief and, somewhere deep inside, yelled: “YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU, BABY JESUS!!” didn’t you?

Don’t feel guilty, so did I, and reports are now coming out that there was also repeated loud screams of “HALLELUJAH!” out of the house of an A. Ethier. However, before you all think I’m this mean monster, let me clarify: I’m not happy because Andruw got hurt. Despite the occasional twisted thoughts that do come into my head, I wish nobody to actually get hurt. But, if he ends up missing time, this news does have its positives: what else can be said? The man needs to get away from the game, right now, and I don’t mean just one or two games at a time. His contract was going to guarantee that he was in there almost every day and this gives him the opportunity to get away and do what he needs to do solve these problems that’s been lasting him the entire year. To say he is completely lost is an understatement and hopefully this break will give him the time off he needs to 1. get completely healthy and 2. refresh himself and get back to remembering that he’s playing, uh, baseball. Let’s face it, folks: for as much as we’ve destroyed him the past two months, and rightly so, a productive Andruw makes us a much better team, at least offensively. So, in the short-term, this solves our logjam in the outfield and the three most productive outfielders will now be playing. Long-term, if Jones comes back to what we know he could be, we finally have the guy we signed. How things play out, we shall see…
