Padres @ Dodgers April 13, 2012: Rain, Rain, Go Away?

Today in “things I never thought I’d write, ever” tonight’s Padres/Dodgers game is actually in real jeopardy of delay or postponement thanks to severe thunderstorms blanketing the Los Angeles area. As everyone is fond of pointing out, a Dodger home game hasn’t been rained out since April 17, 2000, which is practically forever ago. I think a delay is likely but an outright cancellation probably isn’t in the cards, as the worst seems to pass by early evening. (Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times tweeted this great and rare picture of Dodger Stadium with a tarp on, which just seems so out of place.)

The other big news of the day is taking place in a Delaware courtroom, where what was expected to be a relatively straightforward approval of the sale is hitting some bumps, according to Twitporting (hey, a new word) from Eric Fisher of Sports Business Journal and Bill Shaikin of the LA Times. It’s still expected to get done, but there’s a lot of loose ends currently holding things up.

Assuming the game gets in, Dee Gordon takes a seat for the first time this year as Justin Sellers gets a start at shortstop. Tony Gwynn takes the leadoff spot – certainly not ideal, but then, short of putting A.J. Ellis there which Mattingly won’t do, who the hell else is going to do it? – and James Loney, mercifully, sits yet again.
