Dodgers @ Padres May 17, 2012: Batting Fifth, Adam Kennedy

Though it’s only a two game series, the San Diego team we’ll be seeing tonight is going to have something of a different flavor than the one we saw last night; they’ve shaken up their terribly disappointing veteran middle infield, sending second baseman Orlando Hudson to the glue factory and putting shortstop Jason Bartlett on the disabled list with a case of “holy lord this guy is bad so we’ll throw a dart at the board and come up with… knee soreness!” Starting in their stead are two recalls fresh from the minors, Everth Cabrera – who played in 109 games in 2010 but just 78 since – and Alexi Amarista, acquired from the Angels just two weeks ago. I joked on Twitter, but I’m dead serious about it: nothing Mark Ellis will do this year is more valuable than the fact that he his healthy and productive right now, hopefully preventing Ned Colletti from scooping Hudson off the waiver wire.

In order news, Jason Parks over at Baseball Prospectus doesn’t exactly paint a rosy picture around prized prospect Zach Lee, who he sees as a #3/#4 starter. The takeaway quote, in regards to ranking Lee second to Garrett Gould:

You might be asking, how can a prospect with a proletarian profile rank number one in a system like includes a high-profile name like Zach Lee? The easy answer is that I couldn’t find one source that preferred Lee to Gould

Parks was quick to note on Twitter that this isn’t exactly a disaster, because a steady #3 pitcher is still an immensely valuable quantity, and it’s not like one scouting report is an exact crystal ball into the future. Still, for those of us who had hoped that Lee would be an ace-level partner with Clayton Kershaw for years to come. (An admittedly unfair expectation.)

Oh, and Adam Kennedy is hitting fifth tonight, when he’s done nothing to show he even deserves to be on the roster. Every time we talk about the batting order, I try to remind myself it’s not as important as we think, but…
