Astros @ Dodgers May 27, 2012: Happ vs Capuano

Don Mattingly breaks out the righty half of his platoon lineup against lefty J.A. HappScott Van Slyke & Jerry Sands in, while Bobby Abreu, James Loney, & Adam Kennedy are out, though Ivan De Jesus isn’t a part of that, sitting today despite seemingly leapfrogging Sands & Van Slyke in the “who should I send up to pinch-hit” sweepstakes in the mind of Don Mattingly. Then again, Elian Herrera has been impressive in his short time up, so I suppose you ride the hot hand there.

A.J. Ellis won’t get a chance to match his heroics from last night, since he’s out in favor of Matt Treanor today, and we can all stop pretending that Treanor isn’t Capuano’s personal catcher now. That said, we may have figured out why Houston manager Brad Mills seemingly inexplicably intentionally walked Loney to get to Ellis in the ninth last night, setting up the catcher’s walk-off heroics. Per MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell, lefty reliever Fernando Abad was placed on the disabled list today with a right intercostal strain, which could easily explain why he was not available to come in last night to neutralize Loney. He’s replaced on the roster by lefty reliever Xavier Cedeno, who saw brief action with the club last season.
