Brewers @ Dodgers May 31, 2012: A.J. Ellis, #2 Hitter

We have BIG, BIG NEWS, friends, in the world of the Dodgers today.

What? No, not Matt Kemp headed back to the disabled list and Alex Castellanos reieving his long-awaited call up. That’s small potatoes compared to *drumroll*… A.J. Ellis is hitting second in the lineup! Finally, Don Mattingly could hold out no longer, though let’s all hold our exuberance just slightly until we see if it’s more than just a one-day thing. (It’s interesting to note, as well, that James Loney sits against a righty pitcher for the first time all year.)

Back to Castellanos, he’s not in the lineup today, but he does make for yet another interesting multi-positional cog in the Dodger lineup. In an ideal world, I’d hope to see him take over the majority of playing time at second base along with Ivan De Jesus (I’m assuming for the moment that Scott Van Slyke, starting tonight, gets shipped out for Juan Rivera tomorrow), which would allow Elian Herrera to take over more of the responsibilities in center, as he is tonight. That may not be the case, however, since Don Mattingly is reportedly planning to play him mostly in the outfield; if his glove at second isn’t up to par yet, perhaps that’s for the best.

Kevin Goldstein, writing at BP, seems optimistic:

What He Can Do: Castellanos has the potential to be an interesting six-week pick-up for fantasy purposes. On a tools level, he has average power and is a plus runner, and while a high strikeout rate will keep him while likely keep him in the .260-.270 range as a hitter, peak seasons of 15-20 home runs and an equal number of stolen bases are not out of the question. That combination makes him a valuable commodity if he can stay at second base, and early signs were encouraging.

Can’t wait to see him in action. It’d be nice if his teammates could help avoid the sweep against Milwaukee and Zack Greinke before they leave home and head into Colorado.
