Dodgers @ Phillies June 5, 21012: Billingsley vs Lee

“Hey, Alex Castellanos, I have good news and bad news. Good news is, you’re finally back in the lineup. Bad news is, you get to face Cliff Lee. So… good luck with that.” But at least Tony Gwynn‘s playing tonight, and I say that less because I’m desperate to see him face off against Lee and more because that hopefully means that the hamstring issue which sidelined him last night may not be that serious.

Speaking of bad news, the initial NL All-Star ballot results were released today, and while Matt Kemp & Andre Ethier are making good showings, A.J. Ellis isn’t even on the radar as far as catchers go. While disappointing, that’s no surprise, since we knew right from the start that it would be difficult if not impossible for him to get the vote. That doesn’t mean the good work we’ve put in shouldn’t be appreciated, because it got some fun local play and was a more than worthy campaign. And who knows? Maybe we’ll see him in Kansas City yet. And if not, this at least allows me to go back to my usual condition of ignoring the laughably flawed process entirely. (Ellis sits tonight in favor of Matt Treanor, finally catching someone other than Chris Capuano.)

And then there’s this: Javy Guerra has knee surgery this morning, reports Dylan Hernandez. He’s expected to be out for 4-6 weeks, and while that alleviates the bullpen logjam somewhat, that’s definitely surprising to hear. Who would have thought that the liner he took off the face against Atlanta back in April would have ended up hurting his knee more than anything else?

Finally, keep Dodger legend Tommy Lasorda in your thoughts as he recovers from a heart attack suffered today in New York City. Early reports are that it appears mild, though at 84 years of age, no health issue can ever be taken lightly.
