Dodgers @ Phillies June 6, 2012: Capuano vs Kendrick

Let’s take solace at small steps of progress: A.J. Ellis, back in the lineup against Kyle Kendrick tonight, is hitting ahead of both James Loney & Adam Kennedy. That doesn’t change the fundamental fact that Loney & Kennedy both exist and are in the lineup, but at least we’ll sleep more easily knowing that neither is likely to be in for tomorrow’s matinee against lefty Cole Hamels, auditioning for his future team. (Though, if Don Mattingly’s platoon splits hold, that’ll mean that Alex Castellanos‘ two starts in this series will come against Cliff Lee & Hamels. Welcome to the bigs, rook!)

In completely-unimportant-but-hey-what-the-hell news, the Dodgers signed former Diamondbacks prospect Wes Roemer to a minor-league contract today and assigned him to Double-A Chattanooga. Roemer was a supplemental first round pick of Arizona in 2007, and way, way, way back before the 2008 season, this was the Baseball Prospectus scouting report on him:

The Good: To say Roemer throws a lot of strikes is beyond an understatement; in 2006, he began the year with 65 2/3 innings before issuing his first walk. His fastball has at least average velocity and can get up to 92-93 mph at times, while his slider and changeup are also decent offerings which, of course, he throws strikes with. He’s highly aggressive and like to pitch inside and challenge hitters.
The Bad: Scouts worry about pitchers like Roemer who lack one true plus offering, and will likely be far more hittable due to an almost stubborn refusal to set hitters up with pitches outside the strike zone. He’s very intense on the mound, at times to his detriment, as things sometimes go downhill following bloop hits or errors behind him.

Roemer got into only 18 games above Double-A and was pitching in the independent leagues this year. I’m quite sure we’ll never discuss him again.
