Angels @ Dodgers June 12, 2012: Williams vs Harang

In June 2008, the Dodgers signed pitcher Jerome Williams off the roster of the Long Beach Armada, where he was pitching – poorly, I might add – in something called the Golden Baseball League, which folded after 2010. He pitched relatively well in 13 games for Inland Empire & Las Vegas, neither of which are Dodger affiliates any longer, and he may have been teammates with 2012 Dodgers A.J. Ellis, Elian Herrera, Scott Van Slyke, & Javy Guerra; I say “may have been” because I absolutely do not care about Williams enough to cross-reference transaction dates for those teams. After the season, he signed with Oakland, where he pitched poorly in Triple-A in 2009, and was out of baseball entirely in 2010. After five years and 76 games between 2003-07 for the Giants, Cubs, & Nationals, his career seemed to be over. But last year, he gave it another shot in independent ball and got a minor-league deal from the Angels; he ended up making it back to the bigs last year and this year has been effective as the club’s fifth starter. Tonight, he starts against Aaron Harang and the Dodgers. Baseball is a weird game sometimes.

Williams will be backed by a defense which includes Albert Pujols at third base, and while that probably shouldn’t seem surprising given that he came up as a third baseman and made four starts there last year, it somehow still is. Of course, the Dodgers have their own new third baseman tonight in Juan Uribe, making his first start in exactly a month; with Adam Kennedy & Juan Rivera also in the lineup, that means that tonight’s bench includes 75% of last night’s starting infield.

But more importantly: A.J. Ellis, hitting second. Let’s hope that gives Andre Ethier plenty of opportunities to drive in runs in his first game after officially signing his new megadeal today.
