Dodgers @ Athletics June 20, 2012: Eovaldi vs Milone

So there’s a few interesting things going on in the Dodger lineup tonight, most notably that Elian Herrera is getting his first start in right field. As best I can tell, no Dodger in history has ever started games at second base, third base, and all three outfield spots in the same season. So there’s that, which is somewhat impressive on its face, though it’s not a team record for most positions started at in a season. (I know Jolbert Cabrera started at six places in 2003 – all four infield spots along with left & center – and I haven’t gone through the records enough to see if anyone’s done more.)

Secondly, A.J. Ellis is batting ninth for the first time, which is… well, I have no idea. Some business about a “second leadoff hitter”? So that’ll set up him to get on base in front of noted run producer Dee Gordon… and I’m not exactly sure how to end that sentence. But hey, any time you can put a guy with a .428 OBP at the bottom of the lineup so he can get fewer at-bats than everyone else, including Gordon, Juan Rivera, & Juan Uribe, that’s an opportunity you just have to take, right?
