Dodgers @ Giants June 27, 2012: Billlingsley vs Lincecum

Not that long ago, Chad Billingsley vs Tim Lincecum would have been viewed as one of the marquee pitching matchups in all of baseball. When Lincecum was winning back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 2008 & 2009 as Billingsey was establishing himself as one of the best young pitchers in the game, seeing these two on the same diamond would have been appointment viewing.

Now? At just 28, Lincecum has been a mess, with decreased velocity and career-worst levels of walks and hits allowed threatening to derail a career which seemed destined to end in Cooperstown. Billingsley, less than two months younger as his 28th birthday looms next month, hasn’t been great either, though nor has he had a 2012 quite as disastrous. You certainly wouldn’t know that if you asked Dodger fans all too eager to ship him off to Pensacola or Bridgeport or anywhere else without considering the consequences such a move would bring, though.

For the Dodgers, coming off of two consecutive shutouts, simply putting a run on the board against San Francisco would count as progress. They’ll need to in order to avoid tying the club record for most times being shut out in a row, which they’ve done four times, most recently in 2007. Current Dodger Aaron Harang started one of those games, along with Bronson Arroyo and Brandon Webb, back when that meant something.

James Loney sits for the third day in a row. Can’t say I’m crushed by that, though we do have to suffer through the Juan Uribe Experience again.
