Mets @ Dodgers June 29, 2012: Dickey vs Harang

The Dodgers officially announced the Yasiel Puig – that’s “Ya-see-el Pweeg” – signing today, and that came along with it a wrinkle which in retrospect was obvious, but which I hadn’t even thought of until now: Puig’s seven year deal is a major league contract, and that means he needs to be added to the 40-man roster. In order to make room, Justin Sellers was moved to the 60-day DL, though that’s largely a paperwork move as he’s already been out for over a month and wasn’t likely to make it back before 60 days anyway. On the plus side, that means I get to show a “Y. Puig” in the organizational depth chart.

Speaking of the depth chart, it still shows James Loney at first base, and that’s a situation which just cannot last for much longer. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Dodgers have “lukewarm” interest in Derrek Lee, who is 37 in September and who hasn’t played this season. Lee was once a beast in his prime for the Marlins & Cubs, and even hit 35 homers as recently as 2009. Lee struggled upon signing with the Orioles last year, but hit .337/.398/.584 in 113 PA after being traded to the Pirates. It’s difficult to predict how an older player might perform after not playing in so long; on the other hand, it’s hard to think anyone can do worse than Loney & Juan Rivera. I suppose it comes down to this for me: I’m not dying to get Lee, but if it’s that or sending prospects for Bryan LaHair, I’m choosing Lee.
