Reds @ Dodgers July 2, 2012: Bailey vs Billingsley

Still no internet at home – thanks, Time Warner Cable! – so we’ll keep this simple. This afternoon, the Dodgers followed through on Don Mattingly’s suggestion that the team might go a man short this week by demoting Shawn Tolleson to Albuquerque and recalling infielder Luis Cruz. Room on the 40-man was made by transferring Ted Lilly to the 60-day DL, and hey, remember when his injury wasn’t supposed to be serious?

Frankly, I’m not sure what the Dodgers are doing here with Andre Ethier. Have we learned nothing about trying to play through injuries? Obliques aren’t something to play around with; just shelve him until after the All-Star break and play it safe.

As for Cruz, he’s a minor league lifer with little hope of producing at the big league level, as evidenced by an OBP under .300 after 12 years in the minors. (As my post earlier today showed, his home/road splits are ridiculous.) He’s mostly notable to me because of a bizarre group of fans on Twitter who constantly sing his praises for reasons I can’t understand. At best, he can hopefully provide some decent defense and then probably go back down when Mark Ellis returns later this week.
