Dodgers @ Diamondbacks July 8, 2012: Capuano vs Bauer

There was an interesting conversation going around on Twitter last night about whether Juan Uribe – 0 for his last 27, and continuously awful as a Dodger – could be in his final days as a Dodger, since two roster spots are going to be needed when Matt Kemp & Andre Ethier are activated on Friday. Scott Van Slyke is all but certain to go down to make room for one, but what about the other? Jon Weisman runs down the options at Dodger Thoughts:

That Uribe, who is still owed $8 million on his contract after this season ends, is still the Dodgers’ best defender at third base has been the lone remaining argument in his favor. However, that saving grace has been weakened by two emerging factors.  One is that Jerry Hairston Jr. has played capable defense at third while swinging a more reliable bat, and the other is that the injury to Dee Gordon has meant that Luis Cruz needs a spot on the Dodger roster.

Unless the Dodgers are willing to start giving Uribe time at shortstop – he played 21 2/3 innings there in 2011 after 103 games for the Giants at short in 2010 – Cruz is staying. That leaves a battle for the final roster spot between Uribe, Elian Herrera and Adam Kennedy.

My guess is that they’ll probably claim Uribe’s ankle is still sore and put him on the DL to open up a spot, but seeing him DFA’d isn’t out of the question. Personally, while I’d do cartwheels if we were finally rid of him, I’d probably cut Kennedy first. Neither one can hit, but at least Uribe is a decent defender and can conceivably play shortstop, two things Kennedy can’t say. Either way, this is the closest we’ve come to getting rid of one of the two of the, and that along with Kemp/Ethier returning is cause for celebration.

As for today’s lineup, we’re also not seeing our other favorite whipping boy, James Loney. Matt Treanor, who is not Chris Capuano‘s personal catcher, gets a start despite A.J. Ellis hitting a homer yesterday and having the next four days off. Mmmm-hmm.
