From the day we first heard his name, Yasiel Puig has been less a ballplayer than a mythical beast with a funny name. Barely anyone saw him play in Cuba, scouting reports on what type of player he might be varied wildly, and even discussions of how large his contract should have been ranged from “he’s a $500,000 player” from one scout to “the Dodgers didn’t even offer the largest offer” from another source. We heard his agent (laughably, of course) insist that he could help the Dodgers this year while most observers claimed he was two years away at a minimum. Since then, all we’ve heard is that he’s “working his way into baseball shape” in Arizona while simultaneously seeing shockingly muscular photos.
So who is Yasiel Puig? I don’t know, and either do you. It’s fascinating and frustrating all at the same time. But what we do know is that not only did he make his Arizona League debut yesterday (in which he went 0-4), thanks to Jason Cole of Lone Star Dugout, we actually have video. Yasiel Puig exists!
