Chris Capuano Does it All As Dodgers Top Marlins

What’s the best way to overcome a disappointing offense? Chris Capuano decided the best way around that problem was to simply take matters into his own hands, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Miami this afternoon and scoring the only run the Dodgers would need for good measure.

Capuano lost that no-hitter bid on a Jose Reyes single, but managed to work around it and struck out ten over eight scoreless in one of his most impressive outings as a Dodger. He also started off the initial Dodger rally by leading off the top of the third with a single, eventually coming around to score on a Hanley Ramirez sacrifice fly after having been moved to third by singles from Shane Victorino & Mark Ellis.

That 1-0 score held up until the eighth, when the Marlins decided to remove an effective Wade LeBlanc in favor of free agent disaster Heath Bell. Bell, once again proving the “big money deals to non-elite relievers rarely ever work out” corollary, allowed hits to Ellis, Matt Kemp, Ramirez, & Ethier before being removed in favor of Chris Hatcher, having retired just one of the five hitters he saw. Hatcher struck out Juan Rivera before allowing Luis “all I do is double” Cruz to drive in Ethier on a two-bagger to the right field gap; Matt Treanor finally grounded out to end the inning with the Dodgers up 5-0.

For Ramirez, who drove in three runs today and five during the series, the weekend marked a successful return to Miami, as he went 6-12 over the three-game set. I can’t imagine how much Marlins fans enjoyed watching that.

From Nosler at Feeling Kinda Blue: The Dodgers just might have promoted Yasiel Puig to Rancho Cucamonga. Here's a tweet from sp11ke (former minor-leaguer): "#Dodgers Yasiel Puig is in the stands here at Rancho Cucamonga. I guess his 1.500 OPS in 9 AZL games was enough." It makes sense. The Dodgers wouldn't just randomly have Puig attend a game in Rancho from Arizona, so it's a safe assumption. With the addition, the Quakes are going to be absolutely stacked. Even after trading Leon Landry, the lineup could have the likes of Puig, Joc Pederson, Bobby Coyle, Angelo Songco, Jonathan Garcia, Austin Gallagher and Christopher O'Brien in it. It's obvious Puig hasn't faced much of a challenge in the Arizona League, so I like the aggressive promotion. Remember, he's 21 years old and played at the highest level of ball in Cuba as a teenager. It's an appropriate level for him. A 2-3-4 of Pederson-Coyle-Puig is going to look awfully nice. I just wish the Dodgers had made this move (if it's actually happening) a week earlier. The Quakes were just in Modesto and that's only about a 90-minute drive from my place. I would have been nice to see Puig in person this earlier in his professional career. But I digress. This also means someone could soon be on his way to Chattanooga to join the Lookouts. While Songco hasn't fared particularly well at either level of A-ball this season, I'd be on him going to Double-A. He was supposed to begin 2012 there anyway. This season has almost been a lost one for him. I'm hoping he can bounce back in 2013. Photo credits Puig: YouTube screen cap Songco: Dustin Nosler, Feelin' Kinda Blue

so ESPN says we have a 30% chance to make the play-offs... with SF having a 57% chance.... they also have the Angels at 2 GB of the wild card having a 30% chance to make the WC spot and the Dodgers 2.5 at 2.5 GB of the wild card only having a 4.1% chance of landing a WC spot.... i say fuck ESPN and lets go on a tear straight into the postseason!

I Totally missed this: Tweeted from Arash Markazi : James Loney just got to Dodgers clubhouse. Shane Victorino looks at wrist and says, "You MFers better start showing up earlier around here." LOL i like it.... not sure if you guys saw that i got a kick outta it.... he should have just told Loney not to show up at all....

Ok, I can't hold back any longer. Apparently many folks wish to buy umpteen players this off season and effectively become the NY Mercenaries! None of that is truly the Dodger way. You get FAs when you have nothing in the farm. Move Ramirez to 3b, put Dee back at SS, give Sands and Van Slyke another shot, cast off Loney, keep Shane....and be done with it. Geez, it ain't rocket science!

MLB Trade Rumors has some discussion relative to some discussions here.

Kevin Youklis has done well since he went to CWS (making those who wanted him on the Dodgers upset I am sure). However. they project that he will not be maintained by Chicago as it would call for a $13 million contract, making him a free agent. Should the Dodgers be interested in him as a 34 year old free agent?

They project James Loney will have to accept a minor league contract somewhere this fall.

Many here have wanted Kendrys Morales on the Dodgers. They project that with his mediocre stats this year and physical limitations, the Angels will make him available through trade or non-tender

@WestonTaylor boring team, east coast games making for odd LA start times, Marlins team no one cares about... no surprise.

@WestonTaylor It's been too hot, so we're all at the beach. Or working. Well, that's what I was doing.

@RustyH ha. He found that out because I told him about it. I'm going to post on that today.

@Gilbert_Venge those numbers change on a whim.  We were as high as 90% 2 months ago.  I bet if Dodgers would have swept the Rockies, thus being up a game instead of down a game, they would be reversed.

Good news is, they only have 1 series left with the Rox so they can't screw us much anymore, and play a lot more of the Pads and Dbacks, and of course, Dodgers.  Bad news is they still have 1 more series with the Astros...and Cubs.  Jeez, whoever made these ridiculous schedules screwed the Dodgers out of a couple games in the standings from the get go.

@DaveyL13 You say "keep Shane" like he's been part of the team for 10 years. Re-signing him would be the same as signing Bourn or Hamilton. Also, what do we have in the farm? Last I checked, our farm was still one of the worst in the majors.

Frank J Lapidus
Frank J Lapidus

@DaveyL13 Team doesnt need to go hog wild in the offseason, but we absolutely need to solve the 1B dilemma. Beyond that, go hard for Bourne and Greinke. Thats it.

Deuce (is loose)

@DaveyL13   Keeping Victorino probably means a 4 year deal.  And blocking Puig in a year or two.  That's bad science from where I sit.

@KirkDavenport I was on the Youklis train, but probably not for $13 mil.  I believe the reason many wanted to stay with Loney was the assumption of another 2nd half resurgence.  Well, now that this hasn't happened, it's time to face reality.

@Kewldood69  @Gilbert_Venge Fuck ESPN and fuck the MLB schedule makers.  11 games of the Cardinals is not the same thing as 3 series with the Astros (Gnats) or Cubs (Dbacks)...who the fuck thought that up?

DaveyL13
DaveyL13

@Frank J Lapidus my concern with Bourne is he reverts to some of his down years, and Grienke is still a potential headcasr in a big market.

Frank J Lapidus
Frank J Lapidus

@Deuce @DaveyL13 4 years? Yeah, no. I would be fine with 3 years, but only if he hits for us, and we cant get Bourne.

@Deuce  @DaveyL13 I honestly don't think sands or van slyke are major league starters, but what about castellanos?

@JohnM brief stint, exactly. ive him another shot.

@Frank J Lapidus I would go for Youk if it was on the cheap, but he probably is looking for Aramis Ramirez free agent money (3 years $36 mill). I was hoping, but not expecting a Loney surge in the 2nd half, but other than last year, he has usually been worse in his career in the 2nd half. I would like to see him go to the minors with a good batting coach, get his swing back and then return to the majors in a year or so - probably not going to be with the Dodgers though.

I do not understand the fans who want Shane Victorino given an extension to stay. He was only expected as a rental and there are better options out there (Bourn, Hamilton) within the Dodger price range. Why keep the used VW beetle when you can afford a Porsche?

DaveyL13
DaveyL13

@JohnM @KirkDavenport ok John, I agree, he's a great pitching potential nut job.

KirkDavenport
KirkDavenport

@DaveyL13 I will agree with you on Greinke. Lots of good years and only one great year. Stats are very good but not great he is not a Kershaw or Hamels. He is on medication for his social anxiety disorder and I support his efforts to handle it, but if the Dodgers would have to shell out huge $$$ for him I do not think it is the best way to go. There will be plenty of very good pitchers available this fall on the free agent market. If the Dodgers went for him I would not be upset, but they will have to pay him more than they would give to Kershaw when they negotiate with him

Frank J Lapidus
Frank J Lapidus

But lets face it, there are no $450 million offseasons this year, like the Yanks did in 08/09, I wouldnt worry too much about overdoing it. There simply arent the players out there to blow money on

DaveyL13
DaveyL13

I'll be in the minority then, and stick with my assessment to steer clear of Greinkeitis!

Frank J Lapidus
Frank J Lapidus

@JohnM @DaveyL13 @Frank I think Greinke's issues are overblown, but if he can pitch in Anaheim he can pitch in DS

DaveyL13

@DBrim @JohnM Hell, LF or 1B, esp if SV walks.

Frank J Lapidus
Frank J Lapidus

@JohnM @JakeHorvitz @KirkDavenport @WestonTaylor Maybe 5, but any more and Boras can shop his career year wRC+ 116 ass elsewhere, and I take a chance we can get that from SV for a couple years

Frank J Lapidus
Frank J Lapidus

@JakeHorvitz @KirkDavenport @JohnM @WestonTaylor 6 years, yuck. Bourn is good, but far from elite...has he ever broken .800 OPS? I bet it wont take 6, go for 4 and we can trade him in 3 years for prospects

KirkDavenport
KirkDavenport

@JohnM  @WestonTaylor  @Frank J Lapidus Hamilton and Bourn are the only free agent position players of value this year. There should be plenty of good pitchers at affordable prices since there are many up for bid, but as Hamilton and Bourn will be very sought after, price for either will be high. As the Dodgers are wanting to flex their financial muscle I expect them to be in on the bidding even if the prices go way out of line ($20 million plus/year)

Weston Taylor
Weston Taylor

@JohnM  @KirkDavenport  @Frank J Lapidus If we got both, I would have Hamilton/Ethier play first. Fat Jones and Hamilton can't be compared...Andruw Jones was clearly a shell of his old self before he came to the Dodgers.

KirkDavenport
KirkDavenport

@JohnM  @WestonTaylor  @Frank J Lapidus  I have been looking forward to the Dodgers getting Hamilton for a year or so, but I think their biggest need this fall will be a lead off hitter. Bourn is a top lead off hitter as well as defender and his WAR numbers are a lot higher than Hamilton. Hell. it is not my money - go for both and trade Ethier for prospects

Weston Taylor
Weston Taylor

@JohnM  @KirkDavenport  @Frank J Lapidus both of them can be detrimental, though. And yeah, I'll concede the age argument. I'll say this: I don't think Hanley ever comes close to being the hitting champion ever again, though.

Weston Taylor
Weston Taylor

@KirkDavenport  @Frank J Lapidus Either nobody here wants to talk about Hamilton because they think it's useless talking about him because they think he's not leaving Texas, or they don't think he's good. Bourn seems to be a consensus pick.

KirkDavenport
KirkDavenport

@el serracho  @Deuce 1. Someone else - a younger long term solution at both 3B and 1B but do not see much available yet

2. Youklis (3B) and Morales (1B) Youk at 3 years $25 million (or less), Morales 1 year $3 mill and go for Michael Bourn while cutting ties with SV, Loney and Rivera
