Clayton Kershaw Keeps the Good Times Rolling

Once again, I have no idea what to make of this team. Remember back in June, when we were talking about how they went weeks without an offensive outburst, or even last week, when they were largely shut down by the underwhelming Rockies? Now they’ve scored 20 runs in two days, 30 over the last four, and have scored at least five runs in six of the last seven – not so coincidentally, the same six in which they’ve won in that stretch.

Seriously, look at the box score to the night. Bask in all of those crooked numbers, and exalt in the fact that A.J. Ellis could take an oh-fer and have it not crater half the offense. Four of those hits were doubles, and of course one of those came from Luis Cruz; it’s what he does. For Shane Victorino, it marks his eighth straight game with a hit, and the 15 combined hits for the team ties a season high, set back in April against Atlanta.

Two of those hits belonged to Clayton Kershaw, and like Chad Billingsley last night, the offensive breakout should not overshadow an excellent pitching performance. For the first few years of his career, we watched the undeniably talented but still raw Kershaw mix high walk totals and pitch counts with strikeout stuff, and dreamed of the day where he’d walk fewer than three guys each time out. This is now the 13th start in his career in which he’s not walked a single man, and it’s amazing to think that greatness is basically expected of him. We don’t praise it as much as we should, I think, but the man has just been fantastic, especially lately. This brings his FIP down to 2.90, which is good for fifth in all of baseball – and just an eyelash behind Justin Verlander & R.A. Dickey, tied for third. Almost makes you laugh to think people were accusing him of not living up to his Cy Young Award, right? He might yet win another.

With the San Francisco loss, the Dodgers are now a full game up in the NL West, and they go for the series sweep behind Joe Blanton in a matinee tomorrow.

RT @ryanlawrence21: #Phillies have acquired RHP Ryan O'Sullivan from the Los Angeles Dodgers as PTNL in the Joe Blanton waiver trade.

@DBrim He's nobody important.

@JohnM  @DBrim "O'Sullivan, 21, was a fourth round pick in the 2011 draft. He's pitched to a 3.05 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 88 1/3 innings at the Single-A level this season. Baseball America ranked O'Sullivan has 23rd best prospect in the Dodgers' system before the season in their Prospect Handbook."

I agree, no biggie, but I am surprised a PTBNL would be in the top 25

@JohnM Hating Melky is wrong, but detesting him is appropriate.

@JohnM me too. Kinda irritating to know it was all chemically induced.

@EephusBlue  @JohnM I only approve of the chemically induced carrying of a team into the playoffs when said player is on our side.

@Bob Meripol @EephusBlue Finally you understand. Many was a great guy but, as eephus said yesterday, Melky killed his brother.

Just heard a bit of Scott Boras on the radio talking about limiting Strasburg. Stras is only 4 months younger than Kershaw, but Kershaw has almost 900 innings in the majors where Stras has around 200. Boras brought up Steve Avery who was an awesome young pitcher who threw 700+ innings before the age of 24... And then "fell off a cliff." Obviously Stras had TJ surgery so it makes him a different story, but I'm listening to Boras' comments about Steve Avery's decline and starting to worry long term about Kershaw. Sorry to put a damper on your morning

@Goooog well Kershaw has added up his innings gradually over his young career. From what I understand, its a sudden jump in innings that often is correlated with injury. Strasburg has never pitched more than ~140 innings or so EVER. SO him jumping up to 200 would be a huge increase and right after TJ makes it even more sketch. Kershaw has more or less added to his innings totals slowly over the course of his development so innings totals may not be much of a worry.

Bumgarner upped his innings from mid 100s to 210 plus the next year.  Two years later still very good.  Long term who knows.  Fuicking elbow ligaments, how do they work?

@Goooog At least not like it is for Strasburg

@Goooog  @EephusBlue Well I really do feel that the human arm was not designed to throw that hard over an extended period. Kershaw is capable of touching the upper 90s but why do it if u dont have to. Strasgburg looks different from preTJ at least from the SSS that I saw yesterday. I remember him touching the upper 90s frequently before. Yesterday he was really hovering around 95 or so (still plenty fast but not like before). Look at Rubby. He was throwing upper 90s in the 7th inning. Makes me wonder about how damaging that is to the arm.

@EephusBlue Plus it seems like mechanics and velocity might have a lot to do with it. I know Stras throws 100+ and Kershaw is mid 90s but other than that I can't avoid my boss' gaze long enough to do a real analysis

So what do folk think it would take to get Morneau? And what are u willing to give up? I assume straight salary relief is not in the picture or we'd have him already.

@JohnM  @EephusBlue Think that would be realistic?  I just dont have a gauge on the Twins normal dealings or needs to really know other than they are bad

@JohnM  @EephusBlue I don't know our prospects well enough to say. Everything I know about the Dodger minor league system, i've learned here. He seems like a nice, but not overwhelming get but another guy who's not having his best year. sigh. it would be nice to get someone decent at one of the corners.

@el serracho  @JohnM  @EephusBlue Morneau is actually doing fairly well this year.  The risk you're taking is that he reverts to what he did LAST YEAR, which would have you longing for Loney.
