Dodgers @ Braves August 19, 2012: Beardingsley vs Minor

In three rehab outings for Double-A Chattanooga, Scott Elbert saw six batters over two innings. He struck out all six. I think that means his barking left elbow is feeling just fine, and so today he was activated from the disabled list to give the Dodgers two lefties in the bullpen for basically the first time all season, given that Elbert & Randy Choate coexisted for only about 48 hours after Choate was acquired.

In order to make room on the roster for Elbert, Elian Herrera was sent back to Triple-A Albuquerque, giving the Dodgers 13 active pitchers. While I’m generally against the idea of having so many pitchers and such a short bench, I don’t really mind this in the short term. Herrera had little role on this team now that the lineup is healthy and consistent, and other than inventing an injury for Brandon League, there was no obvious pitcher to be shipped out. (I’m pleasantly surprised Shawn Tolleson wasn’t sent down just because he has options, actually.)

The flip side of having the extra pitcher is now your bench is very short, with only Adam Kennedy, Juan Uribe, and whichever of James Loney or Juan Rivera isn’t playing first base that day joining the backup catcher in reserve. In addition to that simply being a terribly impotent bench group, it means that Don Mattingly (or for today, Trey Hillman) isn’t going to be able to simply bury Uribe like they’ve done over the last month – the roster just won’t allow it. I can’t imagine this is a roster situation that is allowed to linger for too long, but then again, the September 1 expanded rosters really aren’t that far away.

In San Diego, Birdsong is continuing his reversion to pumpkinhood.

If Elbert can be more than a LOOGY, that could be huge.

I hope the Padres can hold this lead.

I wonder if Cruz is down for awhile, and Dee comes back on schedule, if they'll try Dee out at third.

I hope Cruz is okay, of course. But if he's out for a while? We'll never hear the end of how great he is, because he won't have had the opportunity to fall apart - and if he does, it's because of injury.

Someone forgot to tell Kemp he's not suspended.

@JohnM Yeah but with Choate there they'll actually use him as a full inning guy, I hope.
