Giants @ Dodgers August 20, 2012: Bumgarner vs Kershaw

The last time the Dodgers saw the Giants, back at the end of July, they walked into San Francisco and swept them by a cumulative score of 19-3, drawing into a tie for first place and leaving fans with potentially the best feelings of the season. The time before that, the Dodgers scored exactly zero runs across three games while being outscored 13-0 in late June, adding insult to injury as Andre Ethier injured his oblique and was eventually lost to the disabled list.

I’m not exactly sure what’s going to happen in the series which starts tonight, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s going to be somewhere in between those two extremes. Since both of those series were played in San Francisco, this is actually the first time we’ll be welcoming the Giants to Los Angeles in more than three months, and my how things have changed in that time: when they last played in Dodger Stadium on May 9, the Dodgers started Dee Gordon, Adam Kennedy, Juan Uribe, & Bobby Abreu; beyond them, Scott Van Slyke, Tony Gwynn, & Josh Lindblom also appeared.

The Dodger lineup tonight looks much different than it did back then, of course, but tonight’s listing is mainly notable in that it includes Luis Cruz, who apparently only suffered a cramp when he pulled up lame in the ninth inning of yesterday’s finale in Atlanta. The simple fact that we’re breathing a sigh of relief that Luis Cruz is fortunately able to play still sort of blows your mind when you take a step back to think about it, yet here we are.

With Clayton Kershaw against Madison Bumgarner tonight, we have a real live marquee matchup. Kershaw ranks fourth in MLB in FIP at 2.94; Bumgarner is 17th at 3.37. (Still not as good as Chad Billingsley, though!)

In some not-totally-unexpected bad news, however…

Lilly is going to end up missing basically the entire season this year, and it’s a good thing the Dodger ownership seems to have unlimited pockets, because eating that $13.5m Lilly has coming to him next year is not going to be pretty.

Kershaw is now third in the majors in FIP.

Old guy at my work always tells me the story about how Koufax threw a no hitter and Drysdale said the first thing that came to his mind was, "Did he win?" This offense kinda makes me feel like that sometimes.

Kemp in his mini slump - 0 for 17 since the ejection. Not a major worry as before the ejection he was getting his hits. It is not as bad as his May slump before his injury. I am more concerned that he is not displaying the HR power. Last year he had about 1 HR per 15.5 at bats. In April he was at 1 HR per about 8.5 AB's (obviously not sustainable). However, since then he is hitting HR's at only 1 per almost 40 AB's. He has been hitting lots of line-drives which is good (until the ejection)

Does he need a rest? (he had lots of rest while on the DL) Does he need relief from the pressure of leading the team? (HanRam and Victorino are supposedly helping there)

What was the verdict on the Giant's second run? At the game live it looked like the throw beat him to the plate. For those of you with replay did you think that Pagan was safe or out at home?

Bumgarner making the Dodgers look silly is the Klondike Moment of Glory tonight....splendid

Is it just me or do the White Sox only score via the HR? And what's up with the Chicago stadiums, always look dim in highlight videos, is electricity expensive over there or something?

Just got back from the game. Pretty good energy at Dodger Stadium tonight, we were just beggin for something to cheer for. Matt Kemp's at bat with Shane on third w/2outs was the moment we had all been waiting for, unfortunately Kemp's mini slump continued and quickly quieted the crowd. I boo'd the shit out of Juan Uribe before and after he struckout, what a fucking joke of a player that guy is. I'm sure everybody on tonight's gamethread was hoping, just as I was, that Kershaw would get to bat again, because at least kershaw looks like a professional baseball player up at the plate, unlike Uribe. Hanley's HR was a nice little bonus at the end of the game. Too bad nobody but Cruz or Kershaw could get a hit. Oh well, it's just one game. Bumfarter through a hell of a game, and so did Kershaw. Time to shit on Lincecum tomorrow.

Well, that was a shitty game.  Gnats postgame show of course had a different take.  Can we go back on the road again?  Something wrong with DS...team can't hit there in the 2nd half

@DBrim Obviously, you wouldn't want to risk that when Urinnedy is available.

@TheConman the throw was a little wide allowing the runner a path to the plate that A.J. did not fully block - the catch and reach around to the runner was obviously a little late. Dodgers needed a  perfect throw, perfect block and perfect tag to have gotten the out. The runner did perfect, the Dodgers just tried, but were just a little off on each element

@TheConman Poor tag by AJ, all the ump needed to call him safe. He looked safe in super slo mo

@Frank J Lapidus I thought that the Klondike Moment of Glory was a Sarah Palin orgasm.

Wish it had been a second Dodger HR from anyone (even Uribe)

@RafaMolina Yuniesky is one of the worst infielders, and hitters, in all of baseball. But he would probably be an offensive upgrade on Urinnedy.

@TheConman The loudest & most energized crowd I've seen in a l-o-n-g time. Also LOTS of empty seats -- for Kersh against the Giants. I just didn't get that. (Not nearly as empty as last year though.)

@LA Woman Yea, I'm quite surprised actually. On espn.com it says last night attendance was 36,878. When I went to the Dodger giants game on monday May 7 night earlier in the season it was 43,713. I guess the "cooler bag" giveaway on might have attracted a bigger audience, and perhaps with school starting last week attendance might go down a tad. Either way there was a great energy last night. Tonight will probably be close to a sellout with Fernando Bobble
