Giants @ Dodgers August 21, 2012: Welcome Back, Rubby

Good news is always good, even when it’s unexpected: more than a year after Rubby De La Rosa blew out his arm against Arizona on July 31, 2011, today the Dodgers activated the young righty and optioned Javy Guerra back to Triple-A Albuquerque. De la Rosa had been basically untouchable in 12 innings over four rehab outings, with scouting reports and velocity readings to match.

If there’s a surprise here, it’s that Guerra had been pitching relatively well, not having been charged with an earned run of his own since July 26 and having a 13/4 K/BB over those 11.1 innings, so I’ll admit I don’t entirely see why the Dodgers didn’t just give de la Rosa another week and call him up when rosters expand on September 1. On the other hand, I’m hardly going to lose a wink of sleep over Guerra getting a week-long vacation in New Mexico until he returns a week from Saturday; mostly I’m just impressed that the team chose not to send down Shawn Tolleson simply because he’s the most junior member of the bullpen.

Short of a phantom DL stint for Brandon League, optioning down Guerra or Tolleson was the only move to make, because unless you’re Dioner Navarro, cutting a veteran like Jamey Wright loose this close to roster expansion is just not a thing that happens. Nor, I will add, should it have been, because Wright’s been decent enough as back-end option in the pen, with a FIP slightly better than Chris Capuano‘s – and anyone who thinks that the recently-acquired League was just going to be dispatched so quickly is not living in reality.

Now that De la Rosa is back on the active roster, the 40-man is full, and with neither Dee Gordon nor Jerry Hairston an option to move from the 15-day DL to the 60, someone will need to be DFA’d once Matt Guerrier and/or Ted Lilly are ready to return in September. Hey, Matt Angle: the bell tolls for thee. (Update: well, maybe. Dylan Hernandez is reporting surgery may be an option for Hairston.)

As for tonight’s game, fresh off a 5-for-6 last night and in the midst of a team-record 21-game hitting streak, Jerry Sands has been recalled to…

Ha, no, that’ll never happen. It’s James Loney, just like it’ll be every night, except when it’s Juan Rivera, which is just as bad. Of the eighty million things that are funny about Loney being your semi-regular first baseman, this might be my favorite: you’re hearing some folks claim that Loney is “heating up”, despite the fact that in 15 August games he has just a .273 OBP. But here’s the thing – his .691 August OPS, while still awful, is still his second highest monthly mark of the season, behind only July’s Ruthian .702.

James Loney is just the worst. But hey, at least we’re only a few short days away from being able to officially fire up the countdown to “one year since Loney’s last home run at Dodger Stadium!” He’s still a first baseman, in case you’ve forgotten.

Loney is paired on the right side of the infield tonight with Adam Kennedy, who gives Mark Ellis a rest at second. Kennedy hits second because he’s playing second base and second baseman hit second, don’t you know. With Shane Victorino bringing in just a .301 OBP as a Dodger into tonight’s game and Luis Cruz & A.J. Ellis at the bottom, someone wisely asked in the comments of the last post if I had typed the lineup out backwards. Sadly, not so much.

So i guess i was on point couple days ago about when will it be ok to call out ethier??!! Oh and btw, we need to stop with the sleepwalking act b/ c tonite's game is eworth 2 in the standings. By the end of tonite's game we will either be .5 game back or 2.5 games back.

800 words on why Andre Ethier sucks now, coming shortly.

in the bottom of the ninth with a terrible defensive catcher behind the plate, how can Kemp not take advantage of defensive indifference? - especially when everyone else does so against the Dodgers. I would really like to see this team's running game analyzed, and Mattingly grilled about it. Waiting for the GIDP should not continue to be a strategy.

Its that time of the year that Don has to start thinking about winning. You have to DFA Uribe and you have to (since they wont also DFA Kennedy) send down a reliever for a position player. For Uribe's spot Elian Herrera. For the reliever's spot Jerry Sands to give Ethier a night off vs lefties from time to time. Those 2 moves along with impending Sept call-ups should help us win more games...

This season has been so fucking up and down, it's worse than riding the craziest roller coaster at Six Flags. With this Dodger team combined with school, work, and all the other bs life gives us, I'm not surprised I've been dipping more lately! Also, I won't be surprised when we reel off three wins with a total score of 28-5 against the Marlins later this week, then get swept by the Rockies by getting outhit 6-42 at Coors Field, with Kemp, Ethier, and Hanley going a combined 3-36 (all bloop singles) in the series. ::deep breath:: sigh.

So one run each game instead of none.  I suppose that's an improvement.  If Capuano pitches well enough, perhaps we'll get a 1-0 win tomorrow.  We sure know we won't get any hitting out of the C position (but Treanor's not Capuano's personal catcher...yeah, right).

I  have not picked up a bat that wasn't plastic in 10 years. I could drink 6 Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA's. Then smoke three fat bowls and still hit better than Uribe vs anyone and Ethier vs lefties

@WBBsAs I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with Kemp. His running doesn't seem impaired, but he doesn't look right at the plate, and not taking that base in the ninth seems like there's something up.

@JoeyE and Mattingly will name him the opening day starter.

@JoeyE   We need to get out of fantasyland and stop expecting him to hit lefties just because Donnie hits him in the middle of the order.  In a huge sample size, he's proved that he can't.  Forget the damned stats if you want.  In deference to VND, watch the at bats.  Against a good LOOGY, he has about as much chance as a chimichanga does vs. Uribe.

@Mike Petriello He has a better chance at helping than Uribe does. Somebody on the bench is better than nobody.

@Deuce  I have been calling out Ethier since before it was popular. <3

And thanks for not being in on the "girly" comments. That shit kinda sent me over the edge. I was raging for a minute. Had to relax.

@VietnamDodger   Blanton to me is a guy whose K/BB is deceptive.  He gives up a lot of hard hit balls because he challenges the hitters without the stuff to be able to get away with it.  It's argued that when he gets hammered it's just bad BABIP luck, but guys square him up alot.

@LA Woman  @VietnamDodger  @Deuce You are right.  I don't want to be 'that guy' who comes in spouting insenstive stuff as if my opinion is the only one that matters.  I've seen it happen to often, so it won't happen again!

@Frank J Lapidus  @VietnamDodger  @Deuce Even if you "meant nothing by it," the damage is done. You all have got to quit feminizing things to indicate you disapprove of them or that they're inferior. It is not acceptable behavior. For "girly," substitute "Mexican" or "black" and you'll have a feel for why we get so enraged.
