Padres @ Dodgers September 3, 2013: Werner vs Blanton

I have to say, Don Mattingly is really making it easy on me with these game threads. Other than occasionally giving A.J. Ellis a breather, the eight position players in the lineup are basically the same every single night these days. I suppose some could make the argument that since the offense hasn’t been clicking, doing the same thing every game may not be the best idea, but then again, who among us is really clamoring for Adam Kennedy or Juan Rivera or Nick Punto? There’s a huge case to be made that the order of the players isn’t optimal, but these are the eight guys the Dodgers are going to go to battle with, so they’d better start hitting.

Of course, tonight they face rookie lefty Andrew Werner, and I feel like there’s no middle ground here: it’s either going to go really, really, well, or really, really, poorly. I think it says a lot about the situation San Diego finds themselves in that Werner was an undrafted free agent who made it from the independent leagues in 2010 to the bigs this year, and this passage from an MLB.com story noting that he’s the 14th different Padre starter this year just kills me:

Wednesday’s outing will be the first Black and pitching coach Darren Balsley have seen of Werner, as he spent all of Spring Training in Minor League camp. Werner signed with the Padres as a non-drafted free agent on Nov. 19, 2010.

On the other hand, you read this, from the same story…

Black said Werner has “a solid fastball in the high 80s, a good changeup. He’s a strike thrower and he attacks and doesn’t back down.”

…and while that seems far from intimidating, isn’t that exactly the kind of pitcher the Dodgers seem to struggle against, especially one they’ve never seen before? At least they’ll face a Padre team missing Carlos Quentin, who was in the original lineup before being scratched with knee soreness in the most #canpredictbaseball moment ever.

If anything, perhaps they’ll get some help from Arizona, who just came back from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to take a 7-4 lead over the Giants thanks to a five-run sixth against Barry Zito & Guillermo Mota, who is my favorite current player right now if only because he illustrates the hypocrisy of PED witch-hunters. Go Snakes!

HAHAHA -- Aaron Harang had a much easier target in Andre Ethier and Jim Hill, but he went for Ellis and Lyons instead.

Lost among all the celebration tonight is the fact that I finally broke the 1,000 point mark on this website. Feels good to be here.

cant get over Lyons saying he only wants a homer if it puts you up or ties, or it's a rally killer

Dear God,

Why did you take Michael Clarke Duncan when Pablo Sandoval was available.

Best regards,

You know, @Mike Petriello , if Cruz keeps playing like this, you're going to be hard pressed to have a case for replacing him next season.

@WestonTaylor Congrats.  I apparently missed my 3,000th point tonight.  That makes me a shoe-in for the Hall.

Duncan was a great actor.  His performance in the Green Mile is utterly fantastic.  Plus, I love that before he got famous he was in "A Night at the Roxbury," one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen, but also one that my family loves.

@Lobo My favorite moment was his part in the "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" scene in Armageddon.

@Deuce  @WestonTaylor no, not Dee. Just depends on who else might be available. Headley? Another SS? We'll have to think about it.
