Matt Treanor Is Just the Best

Well, not in a baseball sense, because he’s having what is arguably the worst offensive year of a career that was already pretty terrible, and at 36 and without a single hit in more than six weeks, it’s pretty easy to see 2012 being Treanor’s last shot at the bigs. So when I say “the best,” I really mean “the worst,” and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Tim Federowicz was slowly moving his things into Treanor’s locker as we speak.

But sometimes, as our less statistically-inclined friends are all too eager to remind us, what happens off the field is more important, and even if it’s just for today only, Matt Treanor is my new favorite Dodger.

From this morning‘s latest garbage piece from T.J. Simers in the Los Angeles Times, which apparently can only afford paragraphs with one sentence apiece:

That’s when someone yells, “Zip it up.”

Now I’m an old man, and every once in a while I forget.

But the voice is telling the team’s PR guy to “Get that clown out of here,” so I know Matt Treanor is talking about me.

“What’s your problem?” says Treanor, and I’m thinking, I’m not the one who hasn’t had a hit since July 26.

“Are you trying to tell me you have no joy in your heart?” I say to Treanor, never for a second thinking I would talk to a Treanor unless it was the athlete in the family.

“Don’t come in here causing problems about our attitude,” says Treanor, and folks wonder why I don’t spread good cheer more often.

I tell him the team is dead, but I’m here to revive it and remind them how important joy is to what they do.

“Get out of here,” says Treanor, a second later saying, “Is there anything else you want to talk about?” Hello, anyone home?

“Sure, but you don’t seem in the talking mood,” I say, and Treanor says, “I am now.”

Then he gets in my face and we’re belly to belly because mine is so big.

“What’s wrong with this team?” I ask.

“No comment,” says Treanor, and the whole team is watching because it beats taking batting practice knowing they’re not going to score anyway.

“Are you playing tonight?” I ask, curious if the Dodgers have opted to surrender.

He’s not, and credit to his teammates for not cheering.

He’s getting really upset, and I’m the one who has been stopped from spreading joy. He says it’s unbelievable the local paper isn’t supporting the team and I never write anything positive.

I mention Cruz, Dee Gordon, Matt Kemp, Ramirez and never get to the Clippers, Vernon Wells and a wonderful USC fan with ALS who is more determined than any of these guys.

“I don’t think you need to come at Hanley like that,” snaps Treanor.

You mean, my man?

He tells me to meet him outside. I have a pass to get back in but I worry he might not. He says, “In the dugout.”

I agree, but need to chat with Mark Ellis. Ellis says he has joy, while Treanor interrupts to call me names that can’t be printed here.

In the dugout, Treanor swears a lot, puts a finger in my face and when a team official suggests he apologize, Treanor goes on an obscenity-filled rant.

All sins are forgiven, Matt. Retire that man’s number.

Simers is a USC guy, of course he's being a dick to the players. Treanor is an awesome dude. I love how earlier in the season he was walking up to back with the theme song from the A-Team, then he switched it to something else for another game (forget what) and struck out in his first at-bat. He called up from the dugout and had them switch his music back to the A-Team theme song and he promptly hits a double and ends up 2-3 on the night.

Hell yeah, Treanor.  Simers is a no talent ass clown.

No way I'm with TJ on this one.  He is simply (in a facetious way that if you take it personally, you turn into Matt Treanor) trying to see who has "joy in their heart".  And as his write up shows, the only one clearly with joy is Luis Cruz.  Guess what, this is the only guy actually achieving, much less over-achieving.  Hanley also seems to have fun with playing baseball with his "I see you" bit and I cannot criticize what he has done for us since he's been here - he's like second in the NL in RBIs since he's been here?  Can't disrespect that.   Everyone else, yes.  They look like they're going to visit a morgue not a stadium each day and it reflects in their batting and OBP: Victorino, Gonzo, Ethier, Kemp -- these guys are not having any fun but they should start by focusing on having some fun out there.  Yes, I know they are basically stealing money from Magic right now, but it makes it worse by pressing and being frustrated.  A kids' game requires a kids' heart -- light and free.  Look at how the Pads and Rox are just mashing right now because they have no pressure and having some fun.  We need some of that right now!  Keep shaking em up TJ.

@WillL And where did you play baseball? Highest Level Mr. expert? I don't know if you noticed but playing this game is hard even if it's not the major league level. If they were hitting nobody would be saying jack, they just happen not to be so people say "they aren't trying" you have no way of knowing that.

@DodgersKingsoftheGalaxy Dodgers payroll is close to $200M, second highest in baseball.  Yes, that's completely it -- "If they were hitting nobody would be saying jack."  However, you and I both know that's not the case right now.  And it's not just a slump - it seems systematic, day after day probably since the A's series.  When you are constantly getting shut out, and the RISP rate borders on the absurd, you certainly want some accountability for the filthy amount of money that is being thrown at some of these guys.

@WillL  @DodgersKingsoftheGalaxy That's kind of what drives me crazy when I read, "Well, we didn't expect to do that well this year." Sure, if we had the same lineup that that got trotted out in June. But we were sold a major upgrade in offense and instead we got a 59 Edsel with the engine missing.

When you read Simers, you need to think of him as someone playing a character, like Stephen Colbert. Simers very well might be an idiotic jerk in real life, but for his articles he's just playing a role. Please don't take him seriously, and if the little arguments and "offensive" comments he makes to players and said players' responses don't amuse you? Don't read Simers At the same time there is no reason to get annoyed at him. The players should be able to handle his antics (it's not like he isn't predictable), and nothing he writes is going to drastically shape public opinion on LA sports, so no reason to argue with some point he makes that is illogical, he's just saying it to piss people off anyways.

Just to play devil's advocate here... did any of you stop to think that the figure of speech Simers employs is HYPERBOLE, or exaggeration? This has been his MO since Day 1, which is why he's never bothered me (even made me laugh sometimes). I've never taken what he writes as completely serious and literal, but also knew there was a grain of truth to his writing. It's like he captures the spirit of a clubhouse or a conversation or a personality.

@LA Woman There's a difference (to me) between reporting or commenting, and deliberately stirring up shit just for the sake of creating controversy and heat. Simers (and Plaschke) can do the latter, but not the former.

Here it is:

Thanks for enlightening me, Simers.  I've got a new favorite Dodger.

Your bio lauds your commentary as being "provocative," but readers across the Southland recognize that "provocative" is just a euphamism for "terrible."  I can't imagine how embarrased Bill Shaikin or Dylan Hernandez must be to work for the same organization as you.  Your shoddy, thoughtless, sensationalist drivel is disparaging to all who possess LA Times credentials.

What do articles like these aim to accomplish?  We already know you love Luis Cruz and hate Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett.  Now you've focused your misguided disdain on Matt Treanor because he's defending his teammates against your mindless provocation.  The Dodgers aren't going to start hitting and winning because of the wild accusations and worthless questions that you throw around in the clubhouse.

For their benefit, I certainly hope your twin granddaugters end up nothing like their grandfather.  The world has too disrespectful saps being paid for their mediocrity."

10 thumbs down, 6 thumbs up.  I know where I'd like to put my thumb.

I don't read the LA Times or TJ Simers anymore, have not in years. However I have never had a problem with him. There is nothing wrong with doing what he does. He's not hurting anyone. It's not hardcore journalism it's just fun. So what that he does not kiss anyone's ass? This post confuses me since I think Treanor is an idiot to take Simers seriously enough to want to get in his face as if what he does effects the club in an impactfull way. Credit to Simers for always writing the encounters as they happen and making fun of both himself and the players. Yall should lighten up.

@Table ... Yeah, a professional troll who knows zilch about baseball, who does nothing more than pander to the current bandwagon/majority opinion of those who know as little about baseball as he does.

He's a real hero.

Table

@JT_DutchHow is making fun of LA sports's heroes pandering to majority opinion? I never said he is a hero, but he's better than the journalists who are taking serious tones whilst writing uneducated garbage. I don't understand how anyone can get worked up about him is all. He's not important.

@Table ... I didn't say he was supposed to appeal to my intelligence.  I'm saying that he shouldn't insult it, either.  But he does.  Why does he?  Because, simply put ... he's not funny, he's not bright, he's not original.  I don't blame people for being sick of his tired gimmick.

"your kind of a fool" ... how ironic.  Good for you if you love the guy.  Seeing how you write and spell, I'm really not surprised.  Have fun with it.

Table
Table

@JT_Dutch His writing should not be compared to the work that someone like Dylan Hernandez does because they fill completely different roles. Simer's work is not supposed to appeal to your intelligence in the first place so your kind of a fool for letting that happen. It's like being offended by something Stephen Colbert says it honestly is.

@Table ... It doesn't take much to find out which Dodger players are favored and which are not.  He praises those who are favored, and trolls those who aren't. Pretty simplistic way of pandering to the lowest common denominator.

He's no better than Plaschke or anyone else, and he's considerably worse than many of those who write for the Times.

I don't see how people are getting "worked up" about him by mentioning how they're simply sick of someone this terrible being paid to write about the Dodgers in any way.  It's a very understandable frustration.  No one likes to have their intelligence insulted in this way.

@Table Of course, there's also nothing right with what he does either.

He's obviously provoking frustrated people.

If he contributes to the stress in the locker room, then he is actually hurting people.

I still agree, I need to lighten up.

For the first time, Interleague Play will be spread throughout the regular season and several other notable American League teams will visit Los Angeles during the 81-game schedule, including the Boston Red Sox from Friday, Aug. 23-Sunday Aug. 25, the Angels on Memorial Day May 27 and May 28 and the Tampa Bay Rays from Friday, Aug. 9-Sunday, Aug. 11. The Yankees played at Dodger Stadium in 2004 and 2010, the Red Sox made their only trip in 2002 and the Rays have never been to Chavez Ravine.

For their road Interleague dates in 2013, the Dodgers will travel to Camden Yards (April 19-21), Angel Stadium (May 29-30), Yankee Stadium (June 18-19) and the Rogers Centre in Toronto (July 22-24). This season will mark the Dodgers’ first game in the Bronx since winning Game 6 of the 1981 World Series at Yankee Stadium on October 28, 1981. The two-game series will also be the first-ever regular season matchup between the Dodgers and Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
