Extra Innings Just Mean More Opportunities For Futility

Oh, sure, it’ll look bad that John Ely, throwing for the first time in 12 days and second time since August 26, got lit up in the 12th as the Dodgers fell 5-2 to St. Louis. I can already see him getting killed, and that’s fine. But let’s be honest here, we’re really going to sit here and blame the ninth pitcher in an extra-inning game, a guy who’s a Quad-A type at best, and say this loss lies with him?

Of course not. With the exception of the extra innings and a surprisingly good start from Stephen Fife, this loss resembles so many others from recent weeks. Shane Victorino went 0-6, somehow managing to answer the question, “can Shane Victorino possibly be any worse?” The list goes on: Adrian Gonzalez contributed an 0-5 of his own. Matt Kemp couldn’t convert a bases-loaded situation in the tenth. Don Mattingly somehow blew through his entire expanded pitching staff in the game and intentionally walked hitters to set up Matt Holliday twice. In 12 innings, the only big hit the Dodgers got was Andre Ethier‘s two-run homer, his 19th of the year. That’s why the Dodgers lost today, not because of Ely; it should never have made it that far. (Okay, and Matt Treanor somehow walked three times, tying a career high he originally set back in 2006.)

It’s now been three weeks since the Dodgers actually won a series, taking 2 of 3 against Miami between August 24-26. Playoffs? We’re talking about playoffs?

So I just finished season 1 of "Breaking Bad". Wow, what a show.

@JohnM I watched two episodes and won't watch any more. Despite occasional outbreaks of dark humor that I enjoy, it's depressingly repetitive - or repetitively depressing.

Who to blame, in order of suckiness, the past 14 days:

Matt Kemp: -43

AJ Ellis: 31

Hanley Ramirez: 39

Shane Victorino: 60

Luis Cruz: 86

Adrian Gonzalez: 89

Mark Ellis: 107

Andre Ethier: 111

Clearly the problem is chemistry . . .

But perchance, could we see AJ and Kemp get some days off since it seems they need to heal? Maybe some Castellanos and Federowicz in the lineup?

By the way those numbers are wRC+.

@Ken Griffey's Grotesequely Swollen Jaw And Adrian still sucks.

But seriously, it really says something when they intentionally walk Ethier to load the bases for Kemp. Umm, yeah...Bison who?

@WestonTaylor  @Ken Griffey's Grotesequely Swollen Jaw I get that he wants to play, but when you're at the point that your wRC+ is 33 over the past 30 days and negative even more recently and you know that the player is injured, then there is no reason to play that player. Even Juan Rivera would produce more right now. Just let him heal. Feeding his pride just to make him happy isn't doing anyone any favors.

Anyone want to take odds that by the time SF comes to LA, the Dodgers will be eliminated from the playoffs, yet sweep SF because they're playing for pride?

By the way, I still stand by my "Dodgers are going to play the 'Nobody Believes in Us' card" statement.

Guess which team has the worst wRC+ the past 14 days. That's right, the Dodgers at 62. The next lowest team is at 72. That's how bad the stacked Dodgers lineup has been

Tony Fernandez (SVS Afficionado)

They also have the 3rd lowest ISO, lowest BABIP, and just 31 RBIs. Yeah, I actually used RBIs here because they are relevant. Also 2nd fewest home runs.

@Ken Griffey's Grotesequely Swollen Jaw Why not just use runs?

@DBrim  @Ken  @Ken I wish I knew. I can't find splits in splits, like RISP the past 14 days. It would be nice, but I'm not privy to that data AFAIK. However, their clutch score is at -0.48 the past 14 days if that means anything to you.

@Ken Griffey's Grotesequely Swollen Jaw @Ken What is their RISP compared to team batting average?

Tony Fernandez (SVS Afficionado)
Tony Fernandez (SVS Afficionado)

@DBrim  @Ken Because not only are they not getting hits, they're not getting timely hits either. But yes, they have the fewest runs as well. You know who has the most the past 14 days?

The Padres have 72 runs and 68 RBI. They lead both of those categories, and are second in wRC+. Yes, the Padres, the team that is much closer to .500 than you thought.

Has anybody mentioned the coralation between Mickey hatcher in the dugout and the lack of scoring. Remember that's why the angels got rid of him. He looks like a fat lesbian cheerleader over there jumping up and down when the dodgers get a bloop single with nobody on. Get him and his crazy energy out of there!!!

Mike Petriello

@Mattinglys Conscious no, because there's not really correlation there.

Weston Taylor (Has More ISO than any Dodger)
Weston Taylor (Has More ISO than any Dodger)

@Mike Petriello  @Mattinglys I believe there is. Lyons has mentioned multiple times how Hatcher works with the batters alongside Dave Hansen. I figured out the stats, but then everything got deleted, so I don't have the exact numbers, but the Angels are scoring about a run more per game since Hatcher left, and the Dodgers are scoring like 0.8 runs less per game.

Now seems like as good of a time as any to state that correlation does not mean causation.

Therefore, blame Juan Uribe.

@Mike Petriello What about the lack of walks. Is there any correlation there. It just seems they are really impatient. Swinging at first pitch, looking at strike three, not fouling anything off, just throwing away at bats. They didn't seem that impatient before he arrived

I just want to let everyone know how disappointed I am in the performence of this team in the last month and a half. However, on the positive side I did get a contract extention!

@Cadtalfryn lust keep having the boys bunt Don. giving up outs is the way to go.

I'd argue that sending VictoSucko to the plate constitutes 'giving up outs'. He owns the loss, imo - bottom of the 9th, runner on 3rd, one out. Fuck him and his reputation, tell me AGAIN why we're not better off with Tony Gwynn Jr - and that's not saying Gwynn is good....but he's NOT VictoStinko, and that's good enopugh for me. Damm I hate that guy.

Get over it? I know everyone's been harping on them for ages about this but maybe you should score some fucking runs. Especially with that lineup.

Today Donnie used more pitchers in a game than a Dodger manager ever has. EVER.

@Cadtalfryn we used 10 pitchers and ran out in the 12th. that seems wrong
