Dodgers @ Reds September 22, 2012

Note: Mike’s on his honeymoon until September 28! Enjoy this auto-published post and help pray that some giant breaking news didn’t drop minutes before this fun yet otherwise fluffy post went up.

Over the years, 232 players have suited up for both the Dodgers & Reds, from George Hemming & Bert Inks in the 1890s to Jonathan Broxton, Todd Coffey, Dioner Navarro, Aaron Harang, Jerry Hairston, & Xavier Paul this year. Only 15 of those players played for the two clubs exclusively and no one else, and it’s been more than 40 years since the last of those men retired – Rule 5 pitcher Jose Pena, who finished off a short career in 1972.

Most of those players never had much of a career to speak of, with the possible exception of Bill Bergen, a hitter so poor that we brought him up repeatedly over the last few years as Juan Castro & Garret Anderson made assaults on the offensive futility record books.

What’s all this mean? Well, mostly that it’s hard to write a baseball blog from a week in the past when you have no idea what’s happening in the actual games. Hooray, trivia facts!

Just got back from Safeco, where the Llaneros beat the Marineros, but from the numbers it looks as if Kershaw was a little shaky. LIked Safeco a lot, good place to see a game.

I can see pulling Kershaw from the game, but I would have let him hit instead of Uribe.

Cards won, do we really need to start Kershaw today? SMH

Baseball Prospectus Event Part Two - Logan

White says they were fortunate in 2002/2003 that not many teams were scouting high school players (he said "Moneyball" era when talking about this time). White says an example of that was how they got Matt Kemp. Kemp was a basketball player, didn't play showcases so there was no real interest in him. White said that they liked him but they didn't want to tip their hand so they would send people him but very carefully as not to tip off other area scouts. The Dodger area scout kept telling White that they could wait until the 8th round or so. By the 6th round, White decided to pull the trigger and they made that pick.

Forgetting for a moment the fact the F-ing giants clinched last night while my wife and I were having dinner in the Marina District in San Francisco (ground zero for the black and orange assclown parade, for those not familiar with SF geography), and furthermore discounting the chance that they might make it to, and even win, the world series again, I am going to need therapy come November as a result of this insane season.

Ugh. Why are they doing this? Don't destroy the franchise player over a lost year. Jesus........

@capnsparrow Their winning is based on Micro Scrotumaro having some of the luckiest months he's ever had, Melky Cabrera being a tool, Gregor Scrub Blanco, Brandon Who Crawford, and bad pitching overall. They're the third luckiest team this year according to Baseball Prospectus, and probably most overall when you take away the tainted performance of Melky Cabrera.

I hope they crash and burn in the postseason.

@Cadtalfryn Here's a better question. With Victorino out (I'm not really upset about this), why does Donnie insist on using mediocre to bad players like Herrera and Rivera? Do the Dodgers really think that little of the PCL's best hitter?

@PasadenaDodger My wife and I saw "The Master" in the Embarcadero, then went to dinner in the Financial District, so we avoided the chaos, but yeah; it's ugly right now

If Clayton starts later today and further injures himself, I won't find out what happens to Donnie, Ned & Co, because I will have flung myself off of the Golden Gate Bridge.
