Dodgers @ Padres September 25, 2012

Note: Mike’s on his honeymoon until September 28! Enjoy this auto-published post and help pray that some giant breaking news didn’t drop minutes before this fun yet otherwise fluffy post went up.

Over more than 40 years of play, the Padres & Dodgers have hooked up on trades only three times. Shocking to say, none were exactly earth-shattering:

August 19, 2008: The San Diego Padres traded Greg Maddux to the Los Angeles Dodgers for players to be named later. The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Eduardo Perez (minors) (September 30, 2008) and Michael Watt (minors) (September 30, 2008) to the San Diego Padres to complete the trade.

July 23, 1998: The San Diego Padres traded Widd Workman (minors) to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Jim Bruske.

April 17, 1969: The San Diego Padres traded Al McBean to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Tommy Dean and Leon Everitt.

What, you don’t remember Widd Workman or Al McBean?

The original move for Maddux, aquiring him from the Cubs in 2006 for Cesar Izturis, worked out very well for the Dodgers, and counts as one of the positive feathers in Ned Colletti’s assuredly cowboy-shaped hat. Maddux signed in San Diego for the next two seasons and made a return engagement to Los Angeles in 2008, though without as much success, pitching to a 5.09 ERA in seven starts before retiring. I vaguely remember there being some consternation about Watt, but four years later he’s still in the Padre organization with only two games above A-ball. Still fun to think that one of the best pitchers of all time donned a Dodger uniform, if even for just a short time.

@el serracho A (likely) record best winning percentage in 1 run games helps. Same for extra inning games.

Yeesh. People that call for Mattingly to be canned stop there. None have any suggestions of replacements that are available who would be upgrades. At best you get lateral moves.

Maddon gets love, but who do you think are the other managers you would want to have?

Wallach

@CodeBlueICU well this dude is arguing that the manager and coaches are responsible for the emotion of the team. So Wallach falls into the category of inept coaches who cant manage the emotion of the team

@CodeBlueICU isn't random coach/manager firing part of the good ol' timey tradition of baseball?

When all is said and done, this team will probably end up with just two months with a winning record, April and May. June was below .500, July and August were exactly .500, and September is below .500. September is also going to be the month with the most inept Dodgers offense. They have just 57 runs scored in the month (for those math inclined fellows, that's 2.7 runs per game scored). The lowest scoring month before this was June with 83 runs scored (2.96 runs scored).

Who to blame (in September) in order of awfulosity:

Matt Kemp (30 wRC+ and he still plays everyday)

A.J. Ellis (27 wRC+, I'd say the long season got to him)

Juan Rivera (always gets a special place in my heart)

Hanley Ramirez (has anyone noticed that his K% is at 30% and his BB% at 2.4%?)

Shane Victorino (slugging all of .239)

Andre Ethier (at least his bat has been above average)

Mark Ellis (would probably be higher on this list if not for his high fielding value, .286 OBP for the leadoff hitter, Victorion at .304 isn't much better)

You all knew Luis Cruz was doing well, but apparently so is Adrian Gonzalez. Well let me backup, he's not doing well by his standards, but the 119 wRC+ is easily the best for a Dodger with a decent sample size.

So with the season on the line, why did Mattingly continue to play injured players (Kemp) and obviously tired players (Ellis) and not replace them with some rookies that are doing nothing but eating sunflower seeds on the bench (Castellanos and Federowicz?). I know they're not as good as these two regulars, but you have to expect that they can better a combined WAR of -0.7.
