Dodgers @ Padres September 27, 2012: Podres the Padre

Note: Mike’s on his honeymoon until September 28! Enjoy this auto-published post and help pray that some giant breaking news didn’t drop minutes before this fun yet otherwise fluffy post went up.

The very first time the Padres & Dodgers played was back on April 15, 1969, in a game that San Diego lost 14-0. That’s not especially newsworthy, since the early Padres were awful, and in fact lost 110 games that first year. What makes that game interesting is that it was started by Dodger legend Johnny Podres, who at 36 was attempting to make a comeback after being released by Detroit in 1967 and out of baseball entirely in 1968.

Podres, who pitched parts of 13 seasons for the Dodgers on both coasts, including the deciding game of the 1955 World Series (for which he won the MVP at age 22), started the second game in Padres history despite having signed only on March 21. He faced the Dodgers only twice in his long career, allowing six earned runs in five innings in that start and then five more in 2.1 innings in Los Angeles on June 18. It was his final start; after pitching an inning in relief in the Astrodome three days later, he never returned to a big league mound.

I'm so glad they finally started hitting, better late than never, but I think we all knew this might happen once the season had just about slipped away.  Now, they're trying to make a late run and odds are heavily against it, and I'm sure they're all wondering to a man why they couldn't do this earlier.  I mean we're all thinking it, so I'm sure they are, too.

I haven't watched the last two games and they've won. I'm sorry to spoil it but I'll be at the game tonight. You guys can blame it all on me.

Today begins THE ERA OF DODGERS DOMINANCE over the Rockies.

Why?

Dave Vassegh has MADE IT SO. Even though the Dodgers have won 10%(?) of their games against the Rockies this year, Davey boy is predicting a sweep.

This is the day Vassegh has made. Let us rejoice and laugh at it.

@The Monocle well hold on...I didn't watch the games, either, and they won.  And I will not be going tonight, so there.

@Guitar Vassegh was also making fun of the A's this year saying "what happened to Moneyball and OBP!" Well, toolbag, you're looking at the results right now. The team with the second lowest payroll in baseball (and not by much) is looking like they'll earn a playoff berth.

@Mike Petriello No problem, Mike. When fanmanship ended up not being able to complete a team this fall, I am glad I got picked up.

@Mike Petriello  @DBrim yeah, it's moved quite a distance from the easily accessible format of old.  i guess it was worth it... maybe...
