The Monster Heads to Los Angeles

Hyun-jin Ryu took a red-eye from Korea to Los Angeles earlier this morning, and he didn’t do it without swarms of media watching his every move:

The 25-year-old southpaw left for Los Angeles yesterday, launching a Major League career with the Dodgers after signing a six-year, $35 million contract, the richest ever for a player from Korea. Ryu has said that he won’t return unless he surpasses former Hanwha Eagles teammate Park Chan-ho, the winningest Asian pitcher in Major League Baseball.

“When I went to the U.S. to sign the contract, it was to get results,” Ryu told a press conference yesterday at Incheon International Airport. Ryu reached the deal in Los Angeles on Dec. 9 after a month of negotiations.

“But now I am in a position to produce the result, so that makes me nervous,” he said. “What matters now is how quickly I can take the pressure off my chest. If I try to adjust, doing as I usually do in Korea, it will be fine, I guess.”

He went on to state that he’d “will work into shape gradually as I did in Korea” — insert joke here — and that he’ll report to camp on February 13.

Most importantly, however, via Dan of the invaluable MyKBO, is that Ryu’s nickname in Korea was “the Monster”, as you can see in the sweatshirt he was wearing at the press conference below. What are the odds on fans hearing that and then deciding to call him Godzilla, blissfully unaware of the vaguely-racist repercussions that assuming all Asians are from the same country bring? 110%? 120%? Higher?

At this point, I just can’t wait to see the man pitch. Considering that the Korean media had Ryu’s flight number tracked, I’m beginning to fully understand just how big of a deal he is over there.

Why would I rather pinch his cheeks than watch him pitch

So either Lilly or Cap look like a pretty good lefty relief option / insurance policy right about now.

@SCruzOptimusDamus Clayton does just fine. I bet he and Bills could hit pretty well if they actually practiced any.

Ryu is already worth every penny and he hasn't even thrown a pitch yet! The Dodgers are on the verge of signing a 7-8 billion dollar TV deal and you best believe, the Ryu signing, along with the AGon trade, were made understanding the size of both the Mexican and Korean markets in Los Angeles! This is gonna be fun...is it April 1st yet??

Anyone think Travis Hafner could be a decent option as the backup first baseman/Ethier platoon partner?  He's a free agent who could probably be signed cheaply and while he doesn't exactly destroy lefties he isn't terrible against them either.  He's also still got a decent amount of power so he could be a pretty good bench bat to come pinch hit late in games.

How quickly people change their tunes on twitter... Dodgers sign JP Howell and people go nuts cuz "omg no Paco" Dodgers knew Elbert situation for a while now I'm sure.

@Bob Meripol says he's going to start physical therapy in 3 days and a throwing program on 6 weeks so I'm sure he'll pitch this year. Paco will fill I'm nicely in the meantime

Excited to see what this guy can do.

Also, richest ever contract for a Korean player?  What about Chan Ho, who they mention in the very next sentence?  His contract was much bigger and fairly infamous, unless I remember incorrectly.  Perhaps the Korean press has done their best to wipe CHP's Texas days from their collective memory.

@BillShears I think they meant richest right out of Korea. Park's was signed as a free agent after several years in MLB.

@GordonMoody I've got a new one for me: Park n' Fly, featuring a very professional woman sitting by herself in a rather short skirt, looking longingly out the window, wondering "When will I find a prince charming to travel the world with me?"
