As most of you know, I’m out of town for a few days, so I’m not going to spend more than a minute or two of my time in the Florida Keys to talk about Kevin Gregg, who turned one decent year in Toronto into a hilariously bad contract with Baltimore that he didn’t even finish. (Seriously though, go check out that constantly declining strikeout rate over the last few years, then see how he’s been unable to limit walks or dingers and wonder how that works out.) Though we all cringe at some of these guys, it’s a longstanding rule here that no NRI is a bad NRI, simply because risk is zero and depth is good. So, fine.
That said, we’ve mentioned more than a few times how overstuffed the Dodger bullpen is, and there’s at least two NRIs who seem more desirable than Gregg in Peter Moylan & Mark Lowe. It’s far from a given that even one non-roster guy makes the roster, so what’s the appeal for these guys? Is there not more opportunity in Miami or Houston or somewhere? Does the thought of a summer on the unemployment line – or worse, Albuquerque – really sound that enticing?
Again, depth is great, so fine. I just don’t get it from the point of view of some of these guys.
