Opening Day Roster Contest: Win a Brooklyn Dodgers Hat

brooklyn_capThis morning in Arizona, the Dodgers will conduct their first full squad workout of the spring. Spring training is in full swing, and not a moment too soon after a long winter.

Let’s celebrate by running an Opening Day roster prediction contest, shall we? I have in my possession an American Needle Brooklyn Dodgers cap, size 7 1/2, similar to the one you see at right. It’s brand new, since I quickly realized it didn’t fit me when I bought it last year, and it’s been boxed ever since.

The rules are simple — predict the 25-man roster the Dodgers open the season with (defined as being the roster the club sends out to media, usually the day before the first game). One entry per person,  I’ll send it anywhere in the lower 48 states, and you have until the end of the long weekend to enter — let’s call it 9pm PT on Monday, Feb 18. Feel free to pass this on to friends, even those who aren’t regular readers. If the size doesn’t fit you, you can always enter anyway and tell me to mail it elsewhere.

To make things a little simpler on me, I’m going to stipulate that everyone starts off with these 12 players who are obviously making the roster. (Yes, anyone could get hurt between now and April, but if so, that’d screw everyone equally — no one was going to leave these guys off in the first place.)

  1. A.J. Ellis
  2. Adrian Gonzalez
  3. Mark Ellis
  4. Hanley Ramirez
  5. Matt Kemp
  6. Andre Ethier
  7. Clayton Kershaw
  8. Zack Greinke
  9. Hyun-jin Ryu
  10. Brandon League
  11. Kenley Jansen
  12. J.P. Howell

That leaves you 13 players to choose from, and there’s no shortage of options. Do you trust Chad Billingsley‘s elbow? Which excess starting pitchers stick with the team? Does Dee Gordon have a chance? Does Juan Uribe? Will Carl Crawford be healthy? Will Luis Cruz build on his nice close to 2012, or his horrible winter league play? Will Tim Federowicz back up A.J. Ellis or play every day in Albuquerque? How will the bench and bullpen round out? Which non-roster guy makes the club? Could someone who isn’t currently in the organization?

Enter your 13 choices below — first names & last names, if you would — and as a tiebreaker, predict the Opening Day attendance at Dodger Stadium. If there’s somehow still a tie, I’ll draw at random. Good luck!

(Contest closed! Check back on April 1 for winners!)

@lumpy space princess It doesn't matter who you are... what matters is your plan. No one cared who you were until you started to troll. If we tried to troll you, would you stop? It would be extremely foolish, you'd say.  You're pretty smart though, we'd reply. Foolish of us....

@DeucesWild Lucky. I'm still on good terms with this girl. We moved on at the same time except she's still with the new guy. She came into my job today and damn. I'm going to refrain from texting or calling her while drunk. Something I never do but still.

@DeucesWild I think it was a "I know you're not going to cheat... but just in case" hah. Alright man, catch you tomorrow.

@Antonio G If she played it on purpose, you dodged a headcase haha. I'm out, time to try to actually get some sleep!

@DeucesWild The movie was great, too. One of the few dvd's I've bought the day of its release. I dated a girl who used to play "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood often, I always got a chuckle out of that.

@Antonio G I love all kinda of music, but I really did grow up purely on country. Johnny Cash is one of my all time favorites, the effortless talent always amazes me

@DeucesWild Hey, I've heard this song. My brother is a huge country fan, I have no idea where he got it from. I don't really mind it, it's not bad. I do love me some Johnny Cash though.

@DeucesWild Alcohol always makes me think I am the world's greatest singer which is why I always end up doing karaoke at the bar haha.

@Antonio G You'd better believe it was! Especially after many shots of bourbon. I become a master chef after a few drinks ABNL

@Antonio G The last breakfast sandwich I made was 2 scrambled eggs, extra sharp cheddar, hashbrowns, and chipotle mayo on an english muffin

@DeucesWild I only had like 2 eggs left which don't really make for a good breakfast so I figured I'd make a sandwich with them.

@HiiiiEVERYBODY I plan to, trust me. He can also get the authentic coolbase player jerseys for about the same price. I want to get a Kemp just to get him to sign, then frame it

@HiiiiEVERYBODY I love my coolbase bp jersey, it was around $80. Thankfully I have a buddy who can get jerseys dirt cheap. The next jersey I'm getting is the vintage Koufax one that retails on MLB.com for $250 (he can get it for around $40)

@DeucesWild yeah true. I've started this conversation before in a post. I have a replica away and home jersey. The home jersey is stained but overall in good condition. can't really notice the staing because it's pretty small. My away is flawless. I can't see myself getting anymore unless it's the away jerseys of the 70s-90s. With the blue dodger lettering with a white outlie. But even then, I can't find myself to spend triple digits on a jersey. I have a magic johnson swingman. But even that was like, $80.

@HiiiiEVERYBODY Those are pretty cool. I rarely wear jerseys though, pretty much only to the games. I'm terrified of spilling something on it and ruining something so costly

@DeucesWild You know what jersey is cool? I fell in love with it. The Chattanooga Lookouts home jersey. Soo dope. It's so fresh just because it says Lookouts in dodger lettering. *drools*

I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

@HiiiiEVERYBODY Yeah, so they can wear the hat forward, yet still use a facemask. I'm not a fan, they make the head look massive

HiiiiEVERYBODY (HiiiiEVERYBODY)
HiiiiEVERYBODY (HiiiiEVERYBODY)

@DeucesWild haha YES. Thank you. But I feel as if the logo on the hat is small compared to the ones I see on umpires.

ok lemme get real picky. I've seen the ones that some of the home plate umpires have and those are mad cool. They have a shortened bill. Looks cool. Like 1920's style.

HiiiiEVERYBODY (HiiiiEVERYBODY)
HiiiiEVERYBODY (HiiiiEVERYBODY)

@DeucesWild yeahhh I digg that one. I'm not a fan of Dodger hats that aren't simple and original but I doo like that one.

What I really want is the umpires caps. all black with the white mlb logo. can't find em anywhere.

@DeucesWild True. I've been in that mode for a while. Especially with her. But today I was taken by her. I tell you what.

anyways, yeah. Probably won't do much about it. I find it funny that she's often the one texting me at random times.

I almost bought the hat that's up for grabs in this contest last night. how funny. I opted out and got a Kings hat. But I think i should've went Brooklyn now. Hot damn.

@HiiiiEVERYBODY Eh, it happens. The last thing you should do is dwell upon it. I subscribed to the "fuck it" philosophy long ago
