A sentence we don’t get to say all that often: in the next three days, there are five Dodger games. Another unusual statement: Luis Cruz & Adrian Gonzalez are playing against the Dodgers, starting for Team Mexico at Camelback Ranch in what is somehow even more of an exhibition than spring games usually are. I can’t wait for the inevitably weird photos of Gonzalez standing next to Dodger teammates, chatting them up after they’ve reached first base. Or Cruz, attempting to tell anyone who will listen that at least one stats site thinks he’s going to be a star.

The game against Mexico — the second to be broadcast for free via dodgers.com — will also feature two-thirds of the regular outfield in Matt Kemp & Andre Ethier. lt won’t, however, feature Zack Greinke, who was expected to try to fight through the flu and get in about about 45 pitches but was scratched instead. Stephen Fife, who was originally going to pitch against the Indians in the other game, starts here instead. That just goes to show you, no matter how many starters you think you have, there’s always the looming danger of a game started by Stephen Fife. (I’m also pretty sure that Ted Lilly, who missed his scheduled outing yesterday to the flu as well, rubbed his face all over Greinke’s mitt just to get him sick too, but I suppose I can’t confirm that. Paco Rodriguez has caught the bug too. Man, Lilly really wants to make this team.)

After Fife, the Mexicans will see Brandon League, Kenley Jansen, J.P. Howell, Matt Palmer, & Zach Lee. Oddly, the Dodgers might see some of their own pitchers, having lent Ryan Acosta, Geison Aguasviva, & Victor Garate to the other side for the day. Oh, and don’t skip past that Mexican lineup to the right too quickly, for that is indeed the Karim Garcia playing right field and batting sixth.

In Goodyear, the game against Cleveland won’t be televised, though the Indians radio feed is available through MLB.com. A.J. Ellis is the only regular to make the trip, but I have to admit that despite the shoddy lineup, I really wish we’d get an opportunity to not only watch Yasiel Puig, but Hyun-jin Ryu. Considering how early it is, Ryu deserves more than the benefit of the doubt, but I think we’d all like to see an effective outing to allay any fears there might be about the less-than-encouraging statements we’re hearing from Don Mattingly and Ryu’s apparent wish to not conform to an American throwing schedule. Behind Ryu is Juan Abreu, and a few minor leaguers.

Due to the competing games in addition to having several players off at the WBC, the Dodgers have called up a bunch of minor leaguers to staff out their benches for the day. At home against Mexico, Corey Seager (SS), Jeremy Rathjen (LF), Darnell Sweeney (2B), Scott Schebler (RF), and Webster Rivas (DH, and who I had admittedly not heard of before today, probably because he has just seven rookie league games under his belt) will all see game action. In Goodyear, Joc Pederson (LF), O’Koyea Dickson (1B), and James Baldwin (OF) should get in the game, though again, not that we’ll get to see them.

On the injury front, there’s good news for Shawn Tolleson — after leaving yesterday’s game after only five pitches with what was terrifyingly described as “a pop” in his left knee, he’s apparently feeling fine today. I imagine it’s still a long shot for him to make the bullpen, since there’s potentially only two spots remaining for him, Javy Guerra, non-roster guys, and excess starters. Carl Crawford is expected to resume working out tomorrow, though there’s still no timetable for him to get into a game. At the very least, Eric Stephen’s report that he’s been arriving at 5:30am each morning to work out should show that Crawford is doing everything he can to return, even if that doesn’t include “throwing and hitting,” otherwise known as “playing baseball”.
