Giants @ Dodgers April 1, 2013: It’s Time For Dodger Baseball

I’m trying to figure out how to write this game thread without simply resorting to “ohmigod baseball ohmigod baseball ohmigod baseball ohmigod baseball”, and I’m largely failing.

Baseball! It’s here! It’s real, and it’s spectacular. Vin Scully is on the microphone, Clayton Kershaw is on the mound, and #22 isn’t even the most talented lefty to take the hill today — Sandy Koufax is expected to throw out the first pitch, which I’m sure won’t set off the sellout crowd at the newly refurbished Dodger Stadium in the least.

Perhaps that’s selling Kershaw just a little short, because his history against this Giants ballclub has been nothing short of dominant. He’s faced every current Giant other Guillermo Quiroz, and in 242 plate appearances, San Francisco has hit a mere .173/.218/.200 against him, with zero homers and a 70/11 K/BB. I… think he’s going to work out here.

Kershaw is backed by the lineup we all expected to see, featuring Justin Sellers hitting eighth at shortstop. Since it’s Opening Day I’ll refrain from dissecting Don Mattingly‘s batting order too much, though I know I’m not the only one less than thrilled by seeing Mark Ellis hit second against  righty Matt Cain, even though everyone on the planet knows Ellis can’t hit righties. But hey, at least A.J. Ellis is hitting seventh.

There I go, doing what I just said I wouldn’t. We’ll get to that question about 161 other times this season, I’m sure. For today, we have Carl Crawford making his debut at the top of the lineup, and Matt Kemp, Adrian Gonzalez, & Andre Ethier filling out the middle. Can’t say it gets a whole lot better than that, does it?

Enjoy the day, friends.

What makes baseball great is what while the sabremetric stats tell the story for the season, each individual game features something so extraordinary, so unique, so telling... we will never see it again.

Here's you, Luis Cruz walk

Our crappy visitor's clubhouse must have drained the Giants chemistry.

I hope the Giants were watching that interview on shitty CRT televisions in their tiny, overcrowded clubhouse.

@Three-bunt inning I said it earlier - we hit the ball well and stranded a lot of runners.  Giants are very lucky it wasn't something more along the lines of 7-0 or 8-0.
