Giants @ Dodgers April 2 2013: The Monster’s Debut

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150So how, exactly, does Hyun-Jin Ryu follow Clayton Kershaw‘s Opening Day fireworks? How do you land in a new country to make your debut for a new team and follow that?

Quite simply, he can’t. It’s not fair to ask him to, and so expectations should be managed appropriately. But I’m still more than a little excited to see our newest toy in a game that matters. For as much as I say that spring training stats don’t matter — and they don’t — Ryu’s situation was a little different, just because we knew so little about him. We can easily dismiss Brian Barden crushing the ball in camp, since he has years of minor league mediocrity to point to. But in Ryu’s case, his spring performance is the only data we have, and he ended it by retiring 29 of the final 30 batters he faced.

That gives me confidence for tonight’s game, though it’s on Ryu to back that up. What doesn’t give me confidence is the top of tonight’s lineup, which is Jerry Hairston & Mark Ellis. Carl Crawford is just as awful against lefties as Andre Ethier is, so it makes sense to try to keep him away from a solid southpaw like Madison Bumgarner whenever possible, but it remains a bit of a bummer that there’s no better way to do that than with Hairston. (At least, I’m assuming and hoping it’s just a platoon thing; with days off on Thursday & Monday, it can’t be about rest.)

From the San Francisco side, the lineup remains the same with the exception of Joaquin Arias replacing Brandon Belt at first base; Belt reportedly is dealing with food poisoning.

Just doing some research for tomorrow's fantasy lineup.  Fuckface Posey is 6/14 (.429) against Beckett.

Ryu didn't learn how tough the MLB is... he learned how shitty his offense is.

The pitch count does not need to be on screen at all time, mlb net. Why this bothers me I do not know, but it does.

@efb Gordon for Sellers and Puig for Hairston/Punto/Uribe works for me. Too much redundancy with our bench. Hairston, Punto, Uribe, Cruz and Ellis are practically all the same player. Schumaker's ability to play CF is the only thing that keeps him out of that bunch.
