Padres @ Dodgers April 17, 2013: Capuano Gone, Kemp Out

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150

As we all expected, Matt Kemp gets his first day off of the season as he attempts to shake himself loose from what’s been a brutal start to the year. Skip Schumaker sees his first action in center field; somewhere in New Mexico, Tony Gwynn sheds a tear. With his behind.

Unsurprisingly, pitcher Chris Capuano has been placed on the disabled list thanks to the strained left calf that forced him to leave last night’s disaster early. Interestingly enough, Capuano had first felt pain in the calf running in during last week’s brawl in San Diego, so there’s another pitching injury you can (partially, at least) blame on Carlos Quentin.

Somewhat unexpectly, it’s not a pitcher who comes to replace Capuano, but rather catcher Tim Federowicz. That seemed a little unexpected at first, but the more I think about it, the more recalling a hitter makes sense. While Capuano’s short start strained the bullpen last night, the club does have two days off in the next five, and there’s no better bet to give you a long start than Clayton Kershaw, on the mound against Tyson Ross tonight. Having an extra position player helps as well this weekend, given that they’ll be in an AL park in Baltimore and will need a designated hitter.

If there is a question here, it’s why Federowicz was called up to give the team three catchers, rather than someone like Alex Castellanos — especially with Jerry Hairston serving his one-game suspension tonight — or Elian Herrera. I can’t say I have an answer for that, though I do like the flexibility of three catchers, and it already seems clear that either A.J. Ellis or Ramon Hernandez — or both — will get some DH time against the Orioles. In April. Which is a thing that’s happening, and which I still can’t wrap my head around.

While Kemp sits, the Padres get their best hitter back, as Chase Headley returns from injury to make his season debut at third base. Cameron Maybin heads to the disabled list with a wrist injury, leaving Chris Denorfia to play center tonight.

I’m not sure about you, but after the panic we’re already seeing — like this, unbelievably – an off-day coming off a sweep at home by the lowly Padres is more than I can take. Help us, Clayton. We need you more than ever.

At some point this team is gonna get hot and that wailing baby will have a smile on his face. It's a long season. We'll all forget this ever happened by the end.

I didn't join any fantasy baseball leagues this year because I felt I'd get all the enjoyment from baseball I needed from the Dodgers this season.

Mistake.

At least the Ducks got beat and the Lakers won!  Now the Kings need to get that jello jiggling, because when those teams are done and all I'm left with is this!  It's a long sumeer before football starts!

I'll take Gonzo going over .400 as a win. An early Kemp dinger I still insist I would care more about than one win.

WHAT THE FUCK.

Our 2-5 hitters have been on base TWELVE times this game.

They've scored ZERO times.

24 runs scored against you in 3 games in your own park by what was a 2-10 pads team....PATHETIC!

Donnie dumb dumb needs to pull his head out of his ass and do something, anything to get this team turned around!  We've watched the same game plan for 3 days straight and guess what, it doesn't work!

@capnsparrowA losing streak is fine, but not playing at least competitvly, this team is getting it's ASS handed to it nightly by a BAD team!

Please elaborate on what Mattingly did to cause this

@CptPineapple @Mike Petriello Maybe not leaving Kersh in as long as he did cause he wanted to sae the batting spot, maybe shaking up Kemp's batting spot a few games sooner.

I'm not really sure, I''m not a manager but Donnie thinks he is and he gets paid to lead the team to victory and if not most of time they get FIRED!   At least in other sports!
