Dodgers @ Orioles, April 20, 2013: Game One (Ryu vs Hammel)

camdenyards

On Don Mattingly‘s 52nd birthday, he gets the gift of two Dodger games. That’s either a great way to spend your birthday — yay, Dodger baseball! — or a terrible punishment, if the team plays at all like they did while getting swept at home by the Padres.

Today’s weather looks to be much better, with temperatures around 60 and mostly cloudy skies, as you can see in this picture tweeted out by Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. Both clubs keep the same lineups as they’d originally planned to have last night, with Hyun-jin Ryu and Jason Hammel on the mound.

While we’ve been over how odd it is to see the Dodgers in Baltimore at all, much less in April, the more I think about it, the more I like it. Camden Yards is a gorgeous park occupied by a usually terrible team, which means that the Orioles are rarely on national broadcasts. I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched an entire game from Baltimore, to be honest. Would you really rather see the Dodgers play there, or in yet another game in Coors Field or Petco Park or Chase Field? It’s a long season. I think I’m happy for the variety.

I won't knock Don on bullpen, I agree with his switches 75% of the time and he has 10x more information than I do so, lets assume I'd agree with 80-90 if I knew. Offensively however, when we're strugglingike this, he never puts pressure on. When's the last time hit and runs and steals were used at all? Much less with any consistency. Drag bunt the faster struggling guys. Anything. Anything to get that bottom 1/3rd in motion, it's painful.

good run, guys. way to blow a 4-run lead and waste more run scoring opportunities

Jimmy Johnson was a good pro coach with the Cowboys and Dolphins. Hopefully he's not that good of a pitcher

If you're not going to follow the 7-8-9 script, Donnie, why make it worse be replacing your 8th inning guy with Mr. 7th?

Jim Johnson is way overdue for a huge fucking blowup

We wasted all our runs on 1 game we gotta spread it out

I know this isn't exactly fair but it's still funny to point out: Belisario 12 pitches, 10 balls

@Mike Petriello

Although the bullpen was weak, this is still about no momentum or consistency at the plate.  The 6-9 hitters in this lineup are awful.  And as bad as Cruz has been, Schumacher is not much better, in fact the entire bench's batting average may below the Mendoza line.

Even though the bullpen has been awful lately, this is still about not scoring runs given all the opportunities.  Of course with future HOF's Schumacher, Hernandez, Cruz and Sellers, it's hard to get anything going.

@WBBsAs I am not a big Donny fan, but I can not put this one him. He has to work with what he has. Beli has sucked this year. Ryu gave up too many runs. when the dodgers score 5, they should be good.

@plaza234 meh. I don't fault him for taking out Jansen. Though I'd probably go with Howell and keep him in for more than one batter.

@moneynow27 @da purple drank It's particularly frustrating to lose a start by Hammel, in which you have a 4-run lead. That's been very rare as a Dodger fan in recent years, given how good the pitching has been during that span. In other words, this season really does suck early on.

Ethier hits the 3 run bomb, and you figure we'll win a blowout for a change.  But in this game, AGon doesn't deliver with RISP, and the 6-9 hitters are just awful.  Something has to change, and quickly, because if they get buried under .500, it's tough to come back.

@moneynow27 @da purple drank Certainly more than 2 weeks of the season. The team is good. They're just playing a certain style right now that gives the "grit" and "chemistry" people reason to gloat.

Da purple, it's really frustrating.  At what point do you concede that the team with great expectations is really not a very good team at all?  Injuries are part of the game, so they can't use Hanley as an excuse.  Kemp had a few scratch hits, but still no long balls, and that's an issue for me.
