Dodgers @ Orioles April 21, 2013: Now Billingsley’s Hurt, Because of Course He Is

camdenyardsI think we all knew Chad Billingsley‘s elbow was going to pop at some point — remember, we went through the lousy history of pitchers attempting to work through similar injuries in January — and the timing of that was going to depend only on what’s going inside in that arm, obviously, not on any outside influences.

So if we’d said before the season began simply that “Billingsley would go on the disabled list with elbow pain on April 21,” which he did today, I think we’d all have sadly shaken our heads and moved on with our lives, figuring that was inevitable anyway.

But if we’d said “also, that’s going to happen after Zack Greinke broke his collarbone and Aaron Harang was traded and Chris Capuano injured his calf and Ted Lilly is already scheduled and so it falls to Stephen Fife to prevent back-to-back sweeps against the Padres & Orioles, of all teams,” I think we’d all stop and laugh at the cruelty of the universe. I mean, what else can you do?

The scary thing is, this isn’t a result of poor planning. Whether out of an abundance of caution or just an inability to find a worthy deal, Ned Colletti hung on to seven of the eight starters this team had in camp, and it still wasn’t enough. Baseball is a cruel sport sometimes.

Besides, the truly frightening thing is what this means going forward, because now that you’ve dipped all the way down to get Fife, your depth is gone. That means that it’s not just “give Ted Lilly a start or two to see what he has left,” it means “oh lord, we really actually need to rely on Ted Lilly,” because if he fails before Capuano is healthy, it means you’re rushing prospects Matt Magill or Zach Lee, or making a panic trade. (And on that note — no, you can’t come back now and say that trading Harang for Ramon Hernandez was a mistake. You may not like Hernandez over Tim Federowicz, but no one could have foreseen what was about to happen to the rotation, losing three starters in ten days.)

We don’t yet know if Billingsley needs surgery, but I don’t see how he can be counted upon at all right now, and the questionable decision to forego a procedure last fall now looks worse than ever. If he’d had surgery then, he’d likely have been more than ready for the start of 2014; if it happens now, he’ll be limited well into next season. That’s all speculation for now until we know more, however.

It’s only April 21, and Greinke & Hanley Ramirez will be back. It’s too soon to panic and declare the season “over”, as far too many Dodger fans have already found fit to do. But it’s a bad situation, and with all of that hanging over the team, there’s still one more game in Baltimore to be played today. Jerry Hairston makes his first start at third base — really, whatever gets Luis Cruz out of the lineup is fine at this point, though I haven’t forgotten Hairston’s throwing problems — and Matt Kemp has been moved to cleanup. Happy now?

It’d be real nice if they could come away from this trip with at least one victory. I can’t say I’m crushed that I’ll be missing most of it while playing softball.

Why no victory post?

Kemp's average has surpassed Ethier's send him to AAA

I don't wanna hear about "small sample size". These offensive struggles (on some level) date back to last year. So no I ain't buy in that whole "wait til Hanley's back" noise. The team just foes not do enough offensively (and hasn't since last year)... and now yo add tll this, our pitching staff goes one deep, Kemp has zero HR's, and its basically the same tired old sleepwalking routine from last year. Save for that comeback win yesterday, I just can't see this team falling behind & coming back to win very often. So they will always need tscore first yo take some pressure off the startingpitcher. I'm sorry but I have hit the panic button. What is exactly will be that thing we can look Fred to that will make us sooooo much better? Sure hsnley and grienke's return could help, but am I the only one that sees last years's "walking dead" act on offense??!!! I'm pissed, worried, and need something to hang my hat on to make me have some hope.... whew feel kinda better now. Thank you!!!

I did the LA bike marathon 3 times when I was a kid. Was fun.

@Disgruntled Goat @Cecil Terwilliger I started in Venice and road to downtown and back. Just too many people. Some of the stop lights were so backed up you had to wait through 2-3 cycles just to get through. I have never seen so many bicycles in my life though. It was awesome riding through downtown on empty streets though.

@LA_Woman Yeah, mostly at the North though. Once you get South of La Jolla it's bays and beaches.

@LA_Woman I lived in apartments that had Maserattis and I passed by exotic dealerships on my way to work every day. Even the people I helped at work acted like their shit didn't stink. I absolutely hated it, I like down to earth folks

@Antonio G @DeucesWild  Yeah, and isn't it geographically divided, too? I remember once kind of plotting it out by car. Never really looked at closely at a map, though. It seemed like there were canyons or something where you couldn't cross. Was odd.

@LA_Woman It's really crazy when I've gone out of town with my grandpa. He's 100% Mexican and I feel he's accepted more places than I am because his first language is Spanish. So weird how the world works sometimes

@DeucesWild San Diego is ridiculously down the middle with expenses. Anything South of the airport (besides downtown) is affordable. Anything North and you better have a damn good job.

@DeucesWild @LA_Woman  Oh, good. I was starting to feel bad. No, I don't mean just rich. But snooty. And... I don't know. There are just some places that don't feel welcoming to people of color.

@Antonio G Sounds like Calabasas when I used to live there. There's still good people, just gotta sift through the snootiness

@DeucesWild There's a street in La Jolla and each corner has the following businesses: Maseratti dealership, Ferrari dealership, Audi dealership, BMW dealership. This intersection is 2 blocks away from an elementary school.

The mall in La Jolla also used to have a BMW dealership. I haven't been there in years so I don't know if it's still there.

@LA_Woman I was only busting your chops, I'm not easily offended at all. Although if by white, you mean rich, I wish I was

LA_Woman

@DeucesWild @LA_Woman I don't think you're white like the folks there, and I bet you'd take offense to them. (And yeah, @Antonio G, you probably know how to get to the good parts of La Jolla -- namely the beach. That place was too confusing for a visitor.)

@LA_Woman @DeucesWild I like going down to the beach at night for some wine. Other than that I never go there. It's like San Diego's Beverly Hills. I've got no reason to go.

@LA_Woman Thanks, I'm open to any suggestions. Last time I was there for a few days was for my buddy's wedding, so we didn't have much time to venture out much

@Antonio G When I successfully stalk you and find out where you live, we're going to some shows

@DeucesWild Because my friends are always busy and I don't have a car and don't want to commute at the wee hours of the morning. That's why when I go out to drink I go to a bar that's a block away from my best friend's house that way I can just crash there.

@Antonio G Why not??? Local music is a blast, especially when a bar is involved

@Antonio G I think I'm heading to San Diego somewhat soon, any local bars for good music you can recommend?
