Rockies @ Dodgers April 29, 2013: Welcome Back, Hanley

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Hanley Ramirez is back! Sort of. Less than an hour prior to game time, Ramirez was activated from the disabled list and he’ll be available to play in tonight’s game against Tyler Chatwood and the Rockies — though he is not in the starting lineup. That means it looks like for all the world that he’ll be in the lineup tomorrow night for his bobblehead night, so get those Dodgers tickets now.

Like the rest of you, I’m beyond finished with Luis Cruz, who rejoins the lineup tonight, and it’s not as though I’m dying to see much more of Justin Sellers or Juan Uribe. Yet while getting Ramirez back two weeks ahead of schedule sounds wonderful on the surface… I’m really wary of him rushing himself back. We’ve seen this so many times before when athletes rush back and either re-injure themselves – I’m looking at you and your hamstring last year, Matt Kemp — or are such a diminished capacity that their presence doesn’t really help the club anyway — now I’m looking at your shoulder, Kemp — and I would hope that’s not the case here.

To make room for Ramirez, the Dodgers have placed Clayton Kershaw on the bereavement list. No word yet on what is obviously a personal situation, but it’s not expected to affect his scheduled start on Friday in San Francisco. Players are allowed to stay on that list for between 3-7 days, which buys the club time to try to figure out what to do with Mark Ellis, who remains active yet (probably) unavailable. Ramirez’ return means the bench isn’t short-handed as it was last night, but obviously more decisions must be made, and soon.

So much other news to get to…

** The Rockies didn’t take batting practice today because of travel difficulties in getting from Phoenix to Los Angeles, including needing to switch planes, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

** Chris Capuano will make a rehab start on Wednesday with Albuquerque as they welcome Memphis and top prospect Oscar Taveras into town. Interestingly, it seems as this was Capuano’s choice, as he preferred to travel to New Mexico to face better Triple-A competition rather than stay in California and pitch for the Single-A Quakes. That would put him on track to start next Monday or Tuesday, though Matt Magill remains on the roster.

** Yasiel Puig was reinstated from the disabled list for Double-A Chattanooga today; he homered in his second plate appearance and then drove in Joc Pederson with the game winning hit in extra innings. No word yet on if he’ll face any suspension or repercussions from his weekend driving arrest.

** Over at Sports on Earth, Howard Megdal has a good conversation with A.J. Ellis on what it’s like being a 32-year-old catcher after all those years in the minor leagues.

** Speaking of which, it’s a damn good thing that Ellis is playing well, because if you look at the wOBA rankings, the best hitter in baseball behind Bryce Harper isn’t Justin Upton or Ryan Braun or Miguel Cabrera. It’s Carlos Santana, currently tearing up baseball with a .388/.453/.687 line. Somewhere, Casey Blake strokes his beard thoughtfully.

** Finally, if you’re in the Pasadena area on Saturday at 2pm, be sure to check out pal Jon Weisman of Dodger Thoughts at Barnes & Noble on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, where he’ll be doing a book signing for the revised version of “100 Things Dodgers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die”.

Injury hobbled team off to disappointing start. Farm system with scary talented prospect just starting Double A, so oozing talent that fans grab towels in anticipation.  Team seemingly on verge of the prospect's call-up, Mass fan knuckle-whitening grabbing the fantasy of the newcomer electrifying the team and transforming the season.  Dodger fans, get your tickets here: watch the Malfunctionin' Marlins screw-up their great prospect Marcell Ozuna: be thankful there might be some baseball people now running the Dodger organization!
