Rockies @ Dodgers May 1, 2013: Nicasio vs Beckett

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150So this isn’t great: for the second night in a row, Carl Crawford sits with a sore right hamstring. Understandably, we’re all panicky about the idea of one of the few consistent hitters this team has seen missing time, but I think that’s exactly the reason why caution is called for here. With tomorrow’s day off, Crawford will have had three full days to rest, and if that’s what it takes, then that’s what it takes.

Remember, while we all focus on Crawford’s return from left wrist surgery and Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, he’s had leg problems in the past, missing a month in 2011 with a left hamstring issue. JP Hoornstra reports that the team does not consider this something that will lead to a disabled list stint, and let’s all be thankful for that.

Of course, I guess I don’t know any longer what is worthy of a disabled list trip. This is the fifth consecutive game that Mark Ellis has sat out with his quad pull, and it’s getting a little absurd here. He’s still feeling pain while running — which is, you know, somewhat important for a professional baseball player — and again the team is a man down.

Tomorrow, again, is a day off, but I cannot imagine that this can go longer than that. If you haven’t figured out in another 48 hours from now if Ellis can play, than you have your answer: he can’t. Besides, a roster move will need to be made to get Clayton Kershaw off the bereavement list and back onto the active roster for Friday. I’m honestly not sure what I’m rooting for; if it’s Ellis to the disabled list, that’s great because it would prevent him from rushing back. If it’s not, then you’ve wasted a week where you could have had an extra bench player or reliever. As we saw with the Ted Lilly game the other night, it’s not like a long man couldn’t have been useful.

Meanwhile, Chris Capuano is making his rehab start for the Isotopes against Memphis right now. Be sure to follow Chris Jackson (@topes_writer) for the latest on that; through three innings, he’s allowed four hits and a run, striking out two. He also apparently knocked down a comebacker with his bare hand, which I’m sure thrilled everyone.

Did I hear Vin correctly that Lilly is due to start Saturday v. the Gnats? Wouldn't it just be better to forfeit and save the 'pen (as if that concerned Mattingly in the least)?

We aint getting anybody new and the guys we got just gotta band together and win nobody is solely responsible and nobody is carrying this club by themselves.

If you think otherwise your just not very smart

Who would have thought Beckett was the one we were going to be complaining about from the N. Punto trade

Matt Kemp really sucked last year. This year he's making wait through agony until he turns it on again. I'm just hoping he doesn't make us wait that long...Hanley has come back off of injury and hit two balls harder than Kemp has all season. Jeez.

@Dang88(Uribe Nutritionist)  Is Seager coming up then or being considered in a trade?  Loons will move Valentin to his more valued position to SS. The Valentin move was kinda curious.

@Dang88(Uribe Nutritionist) TSL .214.260.304 wRC+ 55 - Josh Hamilton .237.330.387 wRC+100 - Andre Ethier.          Either has basically been hitting league average this season. That's a problem for sure, but not the nightmare that is Hamilton.

@plaza234 He clearly HAS power.  The one homer he hit was one very few guys can.  He hit one in spring that went like 450 feet.  His foul in SD probably was close to 470.  The issue with Kemp is his timing and lack of aggression - something we've never really seen from him.

@plaza234 So if he doesn't homer within a week, you'll give up on the whole season and not post anymore negative comments? Ok with me

@plaza234 Yeah what's getting missed in all this is how bad he was to start the game.  When your'e up against the 1st place team in the division, you can't put your team in that kind of hole to start the game.

@I Alivandi @plaza234 His swing mechanics are off.  Only he knows if it's because he's compensating for the shoulder, but whatever it is it's causing to swing and miss a lot.

You're supposed to trade a guy when his value is high, not low.

You guys wouldn't make it a week on Wall Street.  ;-)

@DBrim @I Alivandi @plaza234 I don't know about mechanics, but it seems clear to me that he's really over-thinking his at-bats.  He's pressing and he's tentative.

For example, last night with 1 out and 2 RISP, he strikes out.  You could tell he was thinking WAY too much about what he needed to do instead of just relaxing and having a solid AB.  His last swing looked like someone who was trying to intentionally place a shot for someone in fielding practice.  Next time up, in a no-pressure situation, he ropes a beautiful shot to right field.

I really don't think it's a lack of power or mechanics or anything like that.  I think it's something between the ears.

@LA_Woman @unhelpful comments (VND) I hope to god it's Magill. I feel like they would have sent him down already if it wasn't. Then again, Mellis should have been on the DL days ago so I have no idea what they're doing.
