Dodgers @ Giants May 5, 2013: Who Needs a Full Roster?

Another day, and more of the same. This is now the ninth day in a row (eighth game) that Mark Ellis remains active yet unavailable — and the third day in a row that Adrian Gonzalez was originally in the lineup before being scratched. We also won’t see Jerry Hairston, and while there’s no word on his condition, the fact that he isn’t playing first base really ought to tell you something.

All that, and Matt Magill remains — he’s “still in the rotation,” claims Don Mattingly — to eat up a roster spot, while the team limps along with an overworked bullpen (thanks to short starts by Magill, Josh Beckett, & Ted Lilly) and a short bench.

It’s truly, absolutely, indefensible at this point, and I’ve run out of ways to explain it.

So what we’re left with tonight is a pretty fantastic infield as the Dodgers attempt to avoid being swept behind Hyun-jin Ryu. After 1,417 major league games, Juan Uribe gets his first start ever at first base. That gets Luis Cruz back in the lineup — he was not originally in until Gonzalez was scratched — and terrifies me that Uribe is now being put in the position of trying to collect Dee Gordon‘s often scattershot throws.

Meanwhile, Scott Van Slyke continues to sit in Albuquerque, rather than join a team which does not have a first baseman. Remember, you know me. You know that I don’t even like Scott Van Slyke. I think he’s completely overrated by ABQ stats, yet even I cannot fathom the thought process behind failing to make a move to bring him up.

There’s just nothing that makes sense about this, nor the refusal to get any help for an exhausted bullpen. It’s one thing to deal with endless injuries that can never be predicted and often can’t be prevented; it’s quite another to fail to put your manager and roster in the best position to win.

I think we should also take a look at the fact that we aren't just not hitting HRs, we're also not getting XBH of any kind.  We walk more, we SO less, but we're only hitting 26% of our hits for extra base as opposed to the league average 34%.  This unsurprisingly means we expect more runners stranded

Am i the only who really wanted Uribe in there from the start? He'll hit the occasional dinger, solid D and hell you gave him a boatload of money anyway......and now we see just how good Cruz really is....

Is there really a doubt that the Dodgers are the better team? We played better then they did this weekend and that was with a hurt and short roster. We will be fine i expect a sweep of the Marlins and all of a sudden the season isn't lost

2nd worse SLG% with RISP(Marlins) . 4th lowest RBI's in the NL (Cubs, Marlins, Braves)

Dodgers need new management; Both General and on the field. Constant injuries during Mattingly's reign shows a lack of regimental discipline + team too laid back, no passion. New ownership needs to make everything "new." It's not blame per say, just time for a change all around.

I swear, if there's one fanbase that doesn't deserve a winning team, it's the Gnatfans.  They're the only fans that are never happy unless their team wins AND the Dodgers lose.  To me, being a Dodger fan is about having class, taking the high road and respecting other teams even when we lose.  Meanwhile, the Giants fans seem to care only about making us as miserable as possible, rubbing it in our faces when we lose and they win.  I don't care how many years the Dodgers go without a World Series win or appearance and how many times the Giants win it all, I will always, ALWAYS be proud to be a Dodger fan.

well, most of us are confused about how an infield of barndon crawford, ryan the riot, and marco scutaro functions on a daily basis they are the defending champs of tje ws and division...

RBIs RISP that is. but ATL has the most homers in baseball

@ScottMatusow No.  Mattingly does not deserve the blame for this, not until he gets his full lineup and continues to lose.  Ned deserves blame for putting together this shitty ass bench and failing to DL MEllis to bolster the bench but you absolutely cannot blame Donnie when he's had no real choice but to roll out lineups with Cruz and Sellers on a consistent basis

Yeah it seems like they chant BeatLA more than they chant for their own team

I don't have doubt. We could have easily swept them if we got a little more luck. Having us never hit with RISP is not a repeatable skill.

@Lobo @ScottMatusow  I guess you did not get my point -- team under Mattingly has constantly been injured, especially hamstring issues. To me, this is a sign of a regiment lacking, and a lack of structure. Good managers tinker with line ups. Donny rarely ever does. While I do not blame him per se, I feel it's time for a change all around. from the field to the front office.
