Nationals @ Dodgers May 13, 2013: Oh Good Lord, Josh Beckett vs Bryce Harper

dodger_stadium_openingday2013Congratulations, Scott Van Slyke: after a solid Sunday showing, your reward is… a seat on the bench, as Adrian Gonzalez returns to man first base. For now, anyway; I’m not even sure why I’m bothering to type “Gonzalez is in the starting lineup” more than three seconds before the first pitch based on his recent history of being scratched.

Don Mattingly is going with his lefty-heavy lineup tonight against Washington starter Jordan ZimmermannMatt Kemp & A.J. Ellis are the only righty bats here — and while that’s fine, it’s unlikely to matter. Zimmermann gets lost a little bit in a Washington rotation that has Stephen Strasburg & Gio Gonzalez (neither of whom, fortunately, will be seen in this series) but he’s one of the brightest young starters in baseball. He also has almost no platoon split, pitching to a .002 OPS difference against lefties & righties over his career.

The Nationals are really a fascinating team, since they were the consensus class of the NL but have started slowly; I wrote about their struggling offense over the weekend at ESPN. They’ve been turning it around of late, however, and that all comes back to Bryce Harper, who made his MLB debut in Los Angeles last season. In the last 365 days, he’s merely hitting .279/.352/.516 with 32 homers and 18 steals in 674 plate appearances. He won’t be 21 until October… that just ain’t right.

Elsewhere, we still don’t know where Zack Greinke is starting on Wednesday, and the longer we wait the more likely it seems that he’ll go for the Dodgers, if only to give the Nationals some trouble in potentially preparing for two different pitchers. I voiced my concern about this last week, and frankly, the more I think about it, the more I want to see Matt Magill. It’s not like having Greinke make a second rehab start is such a grievous offense, and he’s admitted that he’s in “spring training form” when it comes to pitch execution; remember, he did miss most of camp with that right elbow concern. I absolutely would not mind playing it safe on this one.

So all that being said, absolutely get ready to see him on Wednesday.

Having to wait for waiver claims and trades is my least favorite part of fantasy baseball and the fact that I am able to do away with it but can't just kiiiiiiiills me.

@LA_Woman I don't mind waiting on a waiver because I know exactly how long it takes but having to wait on someone to make up their mind about a trade is such a drag and then I have to wait two extra days for people to vote on it.

@LA_Woman I picked up Vernon Wells and Profar and put a claim on Masterson that I don't find out about until Wednesday.

@LA_Woman I believe the response you were looking for was: Antonio, thank you so much for the thoughtful and very helpful advice. ;)

@Shadow Commish @LA_Woman @DeucesWild  LOL that first post. I commented to a friend about that "best pitcher in baseball" quote about Travis Wood. I like him, though, and would like the Dodgers to pick him up mid-season.

@LA_Woman I'd be happy just to be in the league, not matter which team was mine. Doors Lady (I like that name better), you take what you want

@Shadow Commish @DeucesWild @LA_Woman  Ai-yi-yi. Maybe I should take his team and give Deuces my team!!! It's pretty wild that his team is so good, and Kyle is in first place and they both did auto draft. Jake's team isn't doing that well, though, but maybe that's because it's not being managed.

@Shadow Commish And this would be my first ever league, so you can take all kinds of advantage of my poor decisions

@DeucesWild I'm going to post something on the message board for Jake and you might just be in the league for next week.

@DeucesWild I would trade you some pitching and a short stop for Ellsbury. Or some blockbuster crazyness for Bautista and McCann.

@LA_Woman Even when I was in high school, baseball and my car were my priorities. Impressing anyone wasn't even in my mind

@Shadow Commish I would've drafted many more Royals, but definitely not a bad team. Pitching is solid though

@DeucesWild @LA_Woman  Yeah, I doubt she has anything to do with it, but it's his peers that he wants to impress, unlike us old fogeys.

@LA_Woman He's got so many good players that are just there wasting away and it's pissing me off haha.

@LA_Woman Just about the players, no knock against the league. My bad, I should've phrased better

@Shadow Commish Oh, that's not what I meant. I just mean the performance of the players. You're good, Commish!

@Shadow Commish @LA_Woman  Yeah, I kind of think Jake's team should be given to one of these people who are wanting to get in, but were too late.

@DeucesWild @LA_Woman There were some minor mistakes made early on by a certain commissioner that are not a big deal anymore but will be dealt with next year.

@LA_Woman @Shadow Commish Well, Jake isn't even paying attention to his team and I still don't know who Shadow Antonio is and it's bugging me that he's in third place hah. I'll just do 12 teams next year first come first serve or something.

LA_Woman
LA_Woman

@Shadow Commish @LA_Woman  That's why next year we should only have 12 teams. Or maybe have two leagues -- with 10 teams each or something. (That's what I said at the beginning -- when you were going to allow something like 20 teams, and then when we ended up with 14... slim pickings.)

@LA_Woman You only have Trumbo and Trout that I'm interested other than Choo and I don't have anything good to offer for either of them other than Morse/Price/One of the SS; and that's not a good deal.

@Shadow Commish  Oh, great. And now it looks like Cingrani is going to be sent back down. I suck at fantasy baseball.
