Angels @ Dodgers May 28, 2013: Remember Joe Blanton?

dodger_stadium_openingday2013After all the insanity that came out of last night’s game, no one should be surprised by this: Nick Punto, star of “the Nick Punto trade” that brought in all that talent from Boston, is out today with a bruised back. Because it wouldn’t be a Dodger game if someone didn’t get injured, right?

That earns Luis Cruz another start, this time at shortstop, and it puts the Dodgers in a bit of a precarious position at the, uh, well, position. Though Punto is reportedly out “as a precaution” and should be available to pinch-hit tonight if needed, shortstop is suddenly very thin. With Hanley Ramirez injured and Dee Gordon & Justin Sellers in Albuquerque, if anything happens to Cruz and Punto can’t go, we might actually have to be seeing Juan Uribe sliding over from third base.

Fortunately, each day brings us closer to a Ramirez return, and the latest on that is that he may begin a rehab assignment on Thursday or Friday, according to Don Mattingly. That would likely put him in line to return at some point during the 10-game homestand against San Diego, Atlanta, & Arizona that runs from June 3-12.

In the meantime, Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, and A.J. Ellis all return to the lineup today against old friend Joe Blanton. Matt Kemp sticks around, but as we anticipated during today’s discussion, he’s moved down to the #5 spot in the lineup for the first time since September of 2010.

By the way, I can’t help but share this, via Baseball Prospectus. Colin Wyers illustrated how situational hitting — i.e., avoiding double plays, while moving runners over on outs — factors into the BP hitting metric “True Average”. I know we all love to laugh at Mark Ellis and all of the “productive outs” he makes, but guess who is #1 on that list so far? Youuuuu guessed it.

Winning streaks, even short ones, make me happy. Plus, this place is way more fun without the trolls

So basically, Ryu threw as hard in the 8th as Jansen / Kersh / Grienke have all year on back to back pitches. Not that he needs to at all, but that's cool.

"Dodger keys to winning: Do not use the bullpen. Let fans merciless boo Matt Kemp. Play Juan Uribe and Luis Cruz in the same game."  -- @DodgerzGM

"And if the fat strike zone the Korean phenom enjoyed bugged you, look at the phrase "Blanton Quality Start" as a tonic to any perceived bias. The home plate ump had a hoochie on the clock back at the hotel because every corner got called for each pitcher tonight and while we could imagine it being a 0-0 tie right now going into the eleventy-millionth inning, the Blue Boys had the inside track on any pitching advantage to be given out."

Any word on why Schumaker took over for Kemp?

@WBBsAs If Segura keeps playing like this the Brewers are not going to be able to afford the kid.

@JorbinM #TGJ2LA @silver_linings_paul_(book) whenever i try to embed tweets it always fucks up. Basically Dave said that Keith Law said Ryu sucked. Then Law said "i never said that." Then Dave was like, "you said he was a reliever who would struggle to crack the rotation." Then Law said "when i watched him he had a below average curve and barely hit 90." Dave replies "Hit 95 in the 8th tonight. You whiffed. It's okay. Just admit it ."

@Lobo(Middling Member of Trade Ethier Bandwagon) @LakerDodger24 @JorbinM #TGJ2LA My only real question regarding him: Will he last? Physically, he is ridiculous, but eventually, his knees will wear down and his speed will decrease. When that happens, will he still be a top player in the league? MJ, Kobe are excellent examples of what shooting ability and footwork get you in the NBA. I don't think LeBron possesses either ability near to what Bryant and Jordan have/had. Not yet, anyways.
