Braves @ Dodgers June 7, 2013: Viva Puig

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Sigh. Why can’t we have nice things? Well, other than Yasiel Puig, I suppose. Yesterday, when Hanley Ramirez had what was termed “a scheduled day off”, I thought it sounded oddly conservative after only two starts but figured that with his season so far, some extra care wouldn’t be totally unwarranted.

But now Ramirez is out of the lineup for a second day in a row with “tightness in the same hamstring,” per Ken Gurnick, and there is just nothing good about that. Have we learned nothing about rushing back too soon from injury? We haven’t? Good.

In fact, it might have been worse if not for the continued heroics of Puig, reports Mark Saxon:

When Hanley Ramirez’s right hamstring didn’t loosen up properly before a pinch-hitting appearance Thursday night, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told him not to run hard out of the box, to avoid further injury.

He wound up walking and could jog home in front of Yasiel Puig, who hit a grand slam.

Wonderful. Though I might add that this situation is exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about when we say that we can never know all of the facts. What if Ramirez had grounded out to shortstop and appeared not to run hard down the line? We’d all have been killing him for “lack of effort,” not knowing that he was injured.

In the meantime, Luis Cruz starts at shortstop and Puig gets to feast on Atlanta left-hander Paul Maholm. We also get our first look at Atlanta’s own powerful rookie, Evan Gattis, but let’s not pretend that anyone is here for anyone other than Puig, who gets his own T-shirt giveaway after just four games in the bigs.

Down on the farm, we briefly wondered whether we might be almost ready to see the debut of Zach Lee on Sunday, because all of the pieces seemed to be falling into place earlier today. Ted Lilly is battling neck soreness (and a severe case of “being Ted Lilly”), and Lee had apparently been scratched from his start tonight for Chattanooga, while Duke von Schamann was promoted there from Rancho Cucamonga. With Stephen Fife already taking Chris Capuano‘s spot and Matt Magill coming off a historically atrocious start, it seemed that Lee might be being held back. But Lee did end up starting tonight anyway, and is currently though six innings for the Lookouts.

There was one promotion out of Chattanooga, reports Chris Jackson, but that would be Rob Rasmussen headed to Albuquerque to take the place of Javy Guerra, disabled with an elbow injury.

So is there any likelihood of Ryun getting rookie of the year?

Why is he shy about getting his shirts ripped off? He looks like a buff dude.

@Always_Earl I'm just being an asshole. Ryu would stand a chance in most years, but a lot of young talent in the league this year.
