D’Backs @ Dodgers June 11, 2013: Call In The, Uh, Calvalry?

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150After a disaster like last night — this entire season, really — the people demand action. And action we have, though it’s arguable whether it really makes that much of a difference.

Let’s start with the departures: after a single day back with the club and all of one pinch-hitting appearance, Justin Sellers heads back to Albuquerque. That’s fine, because, as we love to joke to so often, this team has absolutely no shortage of light-hitting utility infielders as it is. But what they don’t have a lot of at the moment are healthy bodies who can play outfield, and that’s not going to be helped by the fact that Scott Van Slyke is headed to the disabled list, felled by the left shoulder bursitis that has apparently been bothering him since he attempted to make a sliding catch in left field on May 25. He’s been slumping terribly thus far in June — dig that .284 OBP for the season — so if the injury played a role in that, then I’m happier having him on the sidelines.

Coming to take their places: outfielder Alex Castellanos and pitcher Chris Withrow. Somewhat unbelievably, this makes reliever Steve Ames the only member of the 40-man roster who hasn’t yet been called up to the big club. It’s June 11! Unbelievable.

Castellanos has seen his season play out somewhat similarly to last year, in that a poorly-timed injured probably cost him the chance to be called up earlier. This time it was a forearm injury that had him sitting from April 28 to May 16; in 96 plate appearances since, he’s hitting .238/.358/.500. That may seem okay — .858 OPS, right? — but considering his track record and his home park, it’s actually something of a slump for him. Before anyone asks, he has not played a single inning in the infield this season, and is to be seen as an outfield option only. (I suppose losing Van Slyke makes Jerry Hairston & Juan Uribe the backups to Adrian Gonzalez at first base again, too.)

The more interesting name here is Chris Withrow, the 2007 first-round pick who will be making his major league debut. The 24-year-old righty spent four seasons at Double-A trying (and failing) to both stay healthy and be an effective starter; as a full-time reliever for the first time, he’s struck out an impressive 30 in 23.1 innings. Of course, he’s also walked 4.6/9, continuing a career-long pattern of wildness.

I probably don’t have to tell you that Withrow’s addition is hardly the biggest news out of the bullpen, though. Mercifully, Don Mattingly has named Kenley Jansen his new closer. Let’s all remember how happy everyone is to not have Brandon League there the first time Jansen proves he is human and blows a save, okay? In the meantime, who gets the ball in the seventh and eighth remains a work in progress, as Mattingly had only “that’s a great question” to say when asked by Dylan Hernandez.

As expected, Hanley Ramirez sits out for approximately the 195th day in a row. Because why give your manager anything like a full roster, especially when Mark Ellis is still a bit gimpy himself?

Finally, A.J. Ellis went 0-4 with two strikeouts at designated hitter for Rancho Cucamonga today; he is still expected to be activated on Friday. Matt Kemp, meanwhile, hasn’t started running yet, so don’t hold your breath there.

Man slept through all of that last night. All I can say is fuck the diamondbacks and I like Don Mattingly and Grienke a lot more right now.

Call In The, Uh, Calvalry?  @Mike Petriello Mike didn't think you were predicting the future did you?

Scrolling down to read last night's postings I noticed two things.  First of all, probably the only time in Night Show history that the entire night was spent talking about baseball and not unrelated things.  Second, with my like, Eephus' Big Mac Hulk pic now has 28 likes.

Best quote re the brawl from Montero: "It was like 25 against 72, because all the DL guys were out there, too." LOL. Touché.

My East Coast thoughts as of course I had to go to bed after the 6th at 12:00am, and missed the brawl by an inning:  Lost in the shuffle was the fact that FedX got the big hit and we won the game.  As disappointing as this season has been, I'm hoping last night was the beginning of a turnaround.  There's still a lot of games left.  This mess is probably not over with Arizona, but I don't want to see anyone else on the team get injured.

We really need to win tonight vs. Corbin, with Ryu pitching.

A final thought after seeing some GIFTASTIC'ness at chadmoriyama.com... a great job as always.

I didn't realize at first why the Dodger coaches were so fired up, I get Grienke throwing behind Montero (to revenge the ball off Puig's face). I didn't even realize that had Grienke not taking that ball off his shoulder that it would've been two Kennedy pitches thrown at Dodger players heads. Which needless to say is pretty fucked up.

It's sort've anti-climatic, considering Steve Sax and Kirk Gibson are a few of my favorite Dodger players ever, we never seem to get these guys coaching out teams tho. MOAR YANKEES

Quentin brawl => uribe unlikely hero

Kennedy brawl => FedEx unlikely hero

Cannot wait for Luis Cruz to hit a walkoff when Parra charges Ryu.

@Mike Petriello

Mike, do you know if Puig is completely ok to play tonight, given the hammy scare and the nose thing?  We really need him in the lineup.  Also, do you think when A.J. is activated, FedX stays and Hernandez goes?

@Disgruntled Goat

We won the battle, and the war.  And as unbelievable as this sounds, we will now use last night's game as a turnaround and we will compete and end up in the postseason.   There's still enough games to go.

Until he's suspended, sure.

Not offhand, but I think he'll get at least a game or two for throwing punches.

@DBrim

Brim do you know how the appeals have worked out in this situation, given the provocation from Kennedy?
