Dodgers @ Yankees June 19, 2013: Game 1

yankeestadium By the time Hiroki Kuroda throws the first pitch to Nick Punto this afternoon, it will have been something like 66 hours since the Dodger last played baseball. Safe to say, that’s not exactly how you draw it up.

While the Yankees retain the same lineup in Game 1 that they had planned to use last night — other than using Kuroda in the early game rather than Hughes — Don Mattingly has made some changes on his side. Mark Ellis & Jerry Hairston take a seat, replaced in the lineup by Juan Uribe (at third) & Alex Castellanos (in left). That pushes Punto to shortstop, Skip Schumaker to second, and, wonderfully, Hanley Ramirez to designated hitter.

The Dodgers will need to make a roster move in between games today in order to activate Chris Capuano from the disabled list to start tonight. No, there is no “26th man” today despite the doubleheader; since it wasn’t planned 48 hours in advance that rule does not take effect, as it would be unfairly beneficial to the home team who could get an extra player to the park much more quickly than the road team. Unless, of course, you’re the Mets. It’s always the Mets.

Who goes down for Capuano may depend on how well Hyun-jin Ryu does in the first game, but the smart money has to be on Chris Withrow. With a bullpen that’s already stuffed with eight relievers, that’s the easiest place to trim, and the only guys who can be optioned to the minors aside from Withrow are Kenley Jansen & Paco Rodriguez, neither of which seem likely. There’s always the possibility of a phantom DL stint for Brandon League or Matt Guerrier, or shipping out Castellanos to go with a 13-man staff for one game while planning a move for an Elian Herrera to join the team in San Diego, but Withrow seems most likely. Don’t be surprised when he gets shoehorned into this game no matter what the situation.

Yuuup. Good defense for game 1. Do we lead the league in errors? This team is like watching the keystone cops, at the plate and in the field.

Problem is not many pitchers can pitch fastballs exactly where they want
