Giants @ Dodgers June 24, 2013: Ryu. Bumgarner. Go Time.

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Breaking news — the Dodgers have cut Ethier! Oh… make that Devon Ethier, Andre’s 23-year-old brother, who hit .153/.254/.210 in parts of three rookie league seasons and hadn’t played this year. They’ve also apparently signed German teen righty Sven Schuller, who likes FishVille & pretzels, and who we will almost certainly never reference again here.

Speaking of players we should never expect to be wearing Dodger blue… Jonathan Sanchez is making his debut for Triple-A Albuquerque tonight, and it’s been, uh, interesting. He is getting his velocity up to 93-94, reports Chris Jackson, but it took him 30 pitches to get through a first inning that saw him allow a single, double, triple, and two runs. (The triple, apparently, may have been a catchable ball that Matt Kemp lost in a tough New Mexico sun; Kemp at least walked and stole second in his first time up.) Sanchez has an opt-out date of July 1, so there’s not that much time to get a look at him. Of course, he can easily choose not to exercise that option if he doesn’t think there’s a major league job waiting for him elsewhere.

But back to the matter at hand, and that’s the tasty matchup of Hyun-jin Ryu and Madison Bumgarner tonight as the Dodgers return home after a grueling road trip to face the third-place Giants, who are barely keeping their own heads above water with a mark of 38-37. San Francisco has lost 12 of 21 June games, so if the Dodgers plan to turn things around… well, now would be a good time.

The Giants received bad news of their own today when they learned that outfielder Angel Pagan, who hadn’t played in a month, will miss the next 10-12 weeks due to hamstring surgery. Pagan signed a 4/$45m deal in the offseason, so… maybe it’s not just the Dodgers that this sort of thing happens to. But of course, they have Gregor Blanco stepping in to hit .304/.357/.406 in Pagan’s absence, so the point here is really just that I can’t stand the Giants.

As I said last night, people have been wondering how ManBearPuig was created, and why he is so good.....I think I've figured it out.

I hope the Gnats pitcher today lives up to his 15.43 era

Well if we're gonna get raped this offseason by giving up Joc and possibly Lee, might as well try to convince the Mariners to sell and try to collect all the Seagers. He is controllable for multiple seasons.

Of course this will never happen and we'll get A-Ram who will turn into a pumpkin

So this is pretty cool.  This is a test animation done by Disney for a potential animated Where the Wild Things Are movie back in 1983.  It was directed by John Lasseter and served as a test of integrating hand drawn characters with computer generated backgrounds, a process which was later utilized heavily in Disney films such as Tarzan and Beauty and the Beast.  It's pretty impressive stuff for 1983 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvIDRoO8KnM

@Lobo not related but that studio who made totoro were at one point making the little nemo movie that later went to some other animation studio. the animation they managed to put together for that movie was crazy awesome.

@Lobo @Capnsparrow  It's also stretched out horizontally -- you can tell because the circle around him is an oval.

@JackedNate @Lobo It's pretty freaking cool.  It basically served as the prototype for the CAPS animation system (which was developed by Pixar and stands for Computer Animation Production System) in terms of the 2D/3D integration (the system was designed as a means of digitally inking and painting animation cells).  Some of the more iconic scenes from the 90's Disney movies were made possible by CAPS (like the ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast)
