Dodgers @ Rockies July 2, 2013: Yasiel Puig In Coors Field

coorsfieldOver the last several days, the Dodgers have DFA’d Luis Cruz, optioned Peter Moylan, DFA’d Matt Guerrier, recalled Jose Dominguez & Chris Withrow, and then actually turned Guerrier into something valuable in today’s deal for Carlos Marmol and international signing pool room.

Considering how much we like to bag on the front office around here — very defensibly, I think — this recent run of sane thinking is actually a little disconcerting. I say that not in a negative way at all, because I love it. It’s just an odd feeling, I suppose. Is this how Tampa Bay fans feel all the time? Is this what it’s like to have a front office that actually makes rational decisions for valid reasoning?

The Marmol deal keeps getting better, by the way — as I had mentioned, he will start out in the minors, but Jayson Stark reports that if he doesn’t last with the Dodgers and ends up signing with a third club, the Cubs would owe the Dodgers even more money than the $2 million they’re sending for Guerrier and the $209,700 they’re sending in pool room.

Cruz refused his assignment to Albuquerque today, making him a free agent, and Yasiel Puig gets his first crack at Coors Field tonight. Everything’s coming up Milhouse.

I imagine this isn’t the last move we’ll see, because the Ricky Nolasco rumors are still flying pretty regularly, with some reports suggesting that the Marlins intend to trade him before his scheduled start on Wednesday. The Dodgers are concerned about their pitching depth, and rightfully so, so expect them to be heavily in the mix; at this point, I’d put it at better than 50/50 that he’s moved in the next few days.

For those into conspiracy theories, the Dodgers promoted Garrett Gould from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga to Double-A Chattanooga today. Since Gould isn’t really any good — yes, the Quakes play in a high-offense environment, but a 6.23 ERA and ten hits per nine in 206.1 innings over the last two years is pretty bad — it does make you wonder whether he’s on the move… or replacing someone who is.

All of which somewhat shoves tonight’s game to the sidelines, but it really shouldn’t. Aside from the pure joy of seeing Puig hitting in the mile high air, you get Clayton Kershaw pitching against someone who vaguely resembles… oh, wait, that’s actually Roy Oswalt? Wow, Colorado. Wow.

Is Carlos Marmol getting a bullpen slot?  Or they just going to stash him in AAA and hope he gets better?

I would like to recap today's baseball events:

(1) Dodgers get out of the cellar

(2) Kershaw continues to dominate everyone

(3) Puig goes deep again and goes 3-5

(4) Giants get no hit

(5) Giants go into last place in the division

I'd say this is a pretty good day.

Who was the person that had a dream last night that the Dodgers won and everybody else lost?

Kershaws performance tonight cost the Dodgers about 5 million this off season.

So stupid when people talk about the NL Cy Young at this point being Harvey vs Wainwright.

@NeDieterich I made this with a crappy online GIF maker like a year back, if someone with more skills wants to make a better one, let me know and I can send you the original video.

He's coming along. Almost hit one out, seemed to have liked his form on that one.

@ih8turteam He looked pretty bad . . . swung through some hittable pitches.  But he clobbered one in his 4th AB . . . literally caught at the wall in right CF.
