Dodgers @ Rockies July 3, 2013: Puig In Colorado Just Shouldn’t Be Legal

coorsfieldSo ends the Carlos Marmol era before it even starts? Well, not exactly. Despite much excitement earlier today at the apparent news that the Dodgers had designated him for assignment before he’d even managed to get into the Pacific time zone, it’s not exactly all it seemed. We already knew that when the Dodgers traded for him, part of the deal was that he would agree to go to the minors and sort his problems out there. In order to send him down, he needed to pass through waivers and agree to the move. The risk of anyone actually claiming him was something less than zero, so this was really much ado about nothing — though it should be noted at this hour that nothing is yet official.

In the meantime, there’s plenty of news about Dodgers past and (likely) future. Luis Cruz signed with the Yankees, and not only is he going to avoid the minor leagues, he’s in the starting lineup tonight, playing shortstop. That right there ought to show you just how desperate the Yankees are for infield help, considering just how atrocious the David Adams / Jayson Nix pairing has been in lieu of the injured Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. Cruz in pinstripes is probably going to look a little weird; I anxiously await the .360 batting average he’s going to put up over the next three weeks.

Cruz’s fellow DFA casualty, Matt Guerrier, is also in uniform tonight, having joined the Cubs in Oakland. And Ricky Nolasco is apparently not getting traded just yet, because he’s still expected to start in Atlanta at 7pm ET — or just about 20 minutes from the time this post goes up.

But that pales in comparison to my absolute favorite news of the day: Manny Ramirez IS BACK. No, not with the Dodgers, fun as that might be, but with a minor league contract in Texas. There’s a large part of me that wants to see him come back and destroy baseball; there’s a larger part of me that doesn’t really care about any of the baggage he brings. Love you, Manny.

Back to the Dodgers, they finally used some of that international signing pool money to sign a big fish, 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Lucas Tirado. He gets $1 million; I won’t pretend I know anything about him, though Dustin Nosler of Feelin’ Kinda Blue has some good detail here. Don’t expect to see him in Los Angeles until something like 2074.

Finally to tonight’s game, Don Mattingly rolls out the exact same lineup as he did last night, with the obvious exception of Zack Greinke replacing Clayton Kershaw on the hill. I still don’t love the idea of Mark Ellis, arguably the worst hitter in the group, getting the most plate appearances, but I suppose I can’t argue too much. Yasiel Puig won both the NL Player of the Month and NL Rookie of the Month awards, the first player ever to win a Player of the Month award in his initial month, dating back to the the awards first being given out in 1958. He continues to be awesome.
