Dodgers @ Giants July 5, 2013: Welcome Back, Carl Crawford, Sort Of

At long last, Carl Crawford is back! …aaand he’s not even in the lineup, which, okay, I guess. While it sounds weird, I suppose it makes a certain amount of sense, since Andre Ethier has had some success against Matt Cain and you can’t sit Matt Kemp after he’s finally shown some signs of life. I suppose we’ll have a lot of fun parsing the benched outfielder every day for the next few weeks. Unsurprisingly, Scott Van Slyke heads back to Albuquerque to make room, and while I get the arguments that others should have lost their jobs instead, I can’t say I can get that irked about it. Van Slyke will be back soon enough.

In minor league news, third baseman and known tweeter Ian Stewart has signed with the Dodgers and will likely report to the Isotopes. Stewart isn’t that great, but the cost is zero and organizational depth at the position is non-existent, so this counts as good news. Doing any real analysis typing on a phone on vacation is hard… so I won’t. Enjoy the game.

I just turned on the ASG selection show and this guy is saying Harvey is the best pitcher in baseball? Interesting. I believe a guy with the initials CK would disagree with that...

Puig: .420/.449/.706 8 HR, 8 2B, 4 SB

Hanley: .413/.455/.728 7 HR, 8 2B, 4 SB

both 31 games

why no Hanley for all-star talk?

No Giants or Dodgers starting for the NL.

I hate the All Star Game and I hate Fox Saturday baseball games. I guess I'm just a bitter person

National League picks look a lot better than AL

Cap to the pen. Lilly plus salary and some loose prospects for Nolo and his full salary.

VND would hate that deal ;)

Ned was stupid not going after Nolasco before his last start

Capuano's era since over a full calendar year (minus 10 days or so) is 4.95, that's awful

@DodgerLivingintheBay I said this yesterday and Tony told me that BRef's WAR relies too much on ERA or something. Ergo, Harvey is better than Kershaw.

@JoeyE Because hype.  Puig started off batting around .500 and then cooled off a bit, while Hanley started off batting around .300 and heated up a bit.

@PagansOedipalComplex He has the same career batting average as AJ Ellis.  If he's the baseball superman he needs to step it up

@apaulogies @Blahrl Blahford Because the closer we get to a game, the number of "game threat" comments increases exponentially.  Also for artistic purposes, it looks more dramatic

And rushing Lee or Reed is not ideal.

Unless Reed is one of the guys going back. Reed plus two low end guys plus salary relief is an overpay for a rental
