Dodgers @ D’backs July 8, 2013: Injuries 2, Dodgers 0

chasefield…and that’s why you don’t trade Andre Ethier. So much for too much outfield depth, right? The not-really-a-problem of having four starting outfielders lasted for something like 40 minutes before Matt Kemp injured his shoulder on Friday night, and after missing the weekend he’s now been placed on the disabled list. He’ll be out until at least July 21, though obviously it’s premature to wonder if he’ll be ready right then and there.

Kemp’s miserable season keeps on getting worse, really, and for the first time I’m worried that 2013 might just end being a complete wash for him. That said, I’m pleased that they shut him down instead of continuing to play a man short any further. Scott Van Slyke has been recalled from Albuquerque, and Ethier returns to his unexpected job as regular center fielder.

But wait! There’s more! Stephen Fife surprisingly joins Kemp on the disabled list with a recurrence of the right shoulder bursitis that sidelined him for more than a month earlier this season. So much for the short-lived news that Fife was going to hang on to his rotation spot, I suppose? Chris Capuano returns from the bullpen before he’d ever really made it there, and will start the opener of the next homestand against Colorado on Thursday.

Fife reportedly didn’t feel any trouble while pitching on Saturday but then came up sore on Sunday; because of the All-Star break, he might only miss one start. Ricky Nolasco takes his spot on the roster and will pitch tomorrow night. That makes 22 disabled list trips on 15 players, by the way.

We’ve also got a bit of news from the minors, in that Carlos Marmol threw for Don Mattingly & Rick Honeycutt today and should make his debut for Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday, reports Bill Plunkett. Our pal Chris Jackson also has a two-part interview with Dodger director of player development DeJon Watson, which is well worth reading in its entirety, but is mainly notable because Watson indicates that Corey Seager isn’t going to be moving off of shortstop any time soon. Since the day he was drafted, we’d all heard that third base was in his future. It still might be, but not quite yet.

So after all of that housekeeping… well, there’s actually a pretty important game to be played tonight. With Colorado, San Diego, & San Francisco all spiraling out of the NL West race, these are the two clubs likely to fight it out for the crown. If the Dodgers plan on taking a bite out of the 4.5 game gap that separates them, doing it tonight behind Zack Greinke would be a good time to start.

After seeing pictures of Bob and his Mustang rental car, Omer misses the Mustang he gave up for a Civic when he started having children...

Now he's looking at getting an Accord!

This is interesting. The Twins weigh college stats based on what day of the week they come on because...

“At the collegiate level, as we’re going through the evaluation process and putting players on draft lists and trying to determine who to select, we’ll break out how hitters are doing on Friday night versus Sunday,” he continues. “Friday they normally face guys who are good with velocity on their pitches versus Sunday who is probably a freshman who is trying to get his feet on the ground.”

How weird would it be to meet Drank and realize he isn't actually a bottle with Purple Drank in it. Or to meet Bob and realize Steve Lyons isn't his homeslice?

@Mike Petriello I'm guessing it has something to do with... trade deadline approaching? or the new DL members?

I would own a wagon. I gave one of those Dodge Magnums a look, but the seats suck and not enough cargo space.

Omer believes in Drank.

Omer also believes he can fly. And he can touch the sky. Thinks about it every night and day. Spreads his wings and fly away.
