Rockies @ Dodgers July 13, 2013: A Day Without Puig

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150It seems that Don Mattingly and the Dodgers agreed that having a right fielder who couldn’t actually play a full game wasn’t going to work, and so Yasiel Puig is out of the lineup today in favor of Jerry Hairston. As I said this morning, I’d much rather have him sitting and healing than hurting himself and the team on the field, so this seems like absolutely the right decision.

Since his arrival on June 3, there’s been only three other games in which Puig didn’t start in right field. On Thursday, he was in center; on June 25, he was in left, and on June 12, he sat with a sore shoulder after the brawl with the Diamondbacks. Puig ended up entering that game as a pinch-hitter in the 12th, so the last time the Dodgers played a game without him, it was June 2, also against the Rockies.

Unfortunately for Mattingly, Carl Crawford remains out of the lineup with a stiff back — “nothing really significant” came up in an MRI exam, reports Dylan Hernandez — so the outfield is once again operating at far less than full strength. Both Crawford & Puig are expected to be available off the bench, per Mark Saxon, and disabled list trips aren’t expected at this time.

Arizona beat Milwaukee last night while the Dodgers fell to Colorado, so with only two games remaining and a 2.5 game deficit to the Diamondbacks, the Dodgers are no longer able to grab a share of first place in the first half. They’ll need to beat the Rockies in at least one of the next two games to guarantee not only that they won’t drop below .500, but that they’ll hang on to second place on their own rather than fall into a tie with Colorado.

So since they have time to waste do they show a Ken Burns special to bring up the history on "42"

I shit you not, Mama Drank just told Drank that "the female trainer can't stand up to the male egos, perhaps"

pitch score on this game must be one of Geinke's all time best

I give Don credit for letting him finish.  A lot of managers would have gotten weak knees and brought in the "closer."

Schumaker leads off and scores the only run. Guess it works.

I can't tell if Chatwood looks like he's going to cry or wants to punch a wall
