Dodgers @ Blue Jays July 24, 2013: Leave Ted Lilly in Canada

rogerscentre

So there’s good news and bad news, I suppose. Matt Kemp heads back to the disabled list for the third time this year thanks to the ankle injury he sustained on Sunday in Washington — have we learned nothing about listening to Don Mattingly when he talks about how severe injuries are? — and while that’s clearly disappointing, it’s the right move. We went over why the other day, and the short version is that there’s no sense in expecting Kemp to successfully push through injury at this point or to ask Mattingly to play with a short bench.

This protects Kemp from himself, so that’s the right move. It’s of course back-dated to when he was injured, and he’ll be eligible to return on August 6.

The problem here is that Scott Van Slyke isn’t coming back from Triple-A to replace Kemp… Ted Lilly is. I’d like to say that I have a good explanation for you all on this, but I really don’t. Van Slyke has been down for fewer than 10 days, but the Kemp injury would have allowed him to return sooner. Lilly hasn’t even pitched in the minors in weeks, last appearing for Rancho Cucamonga on July 6, allowing nine hits and six earned runs in 5.1 innings.

Since then all we’ve heard about him is that he’s planning to be a reliever since his sore neck won’t allow him to handle a starter’s workload, and that he’s been pitching simulated games to Kemp. So now he’s apparently the 13th pitcher, and part of a bullpen that also has Brandon League and Carlos Marmol. The timing on this is all very odd because there’s nothing that we know of that said Lilly had to be activated right now — his rehab stint started on June 30 so he’s within 30 days — and it’s certainly not like this staff has a need for him.

I think the only thing we know for sure at the moment is that this is not a situation that’s going to last all that long. It’s seven days before the trading deadline, and moves are going to be made. (Or, who are we kidding, Lilly will just hurt himself again.) For all of the accusations I’m already seeing of “Ned being Ned,” there really has to be more to this, because it’s just too bizarre to exist otherwise. And doesn’t winning something like 87 games in a row buy you just a little bit of rope? No? It doesn’t? Well, okay then.

This game, yesterday's game, those first two unreal games against Washington, the 14-inning marathon against Zona, the ninth-inning Romo rally, Kemp's game-ending League-bailout catch, and the history-making road winning steak have all come in the last month.

A Gnatfan on the potential of improving the team at deadline: "This is almost like the U.S. Government sending in reinforcements a week after Custer and his men have been scalped and quartered at Little Big Horn."

@Omer @Lobo @moneynow27  @Nonfactor Yeah but our offense is a fucking wrecking ball right now.  AND they have to face Greinke, Kershaw, and Ryu.  Not gonna be easy for them
